View Full Version : G70 to hit retail in 2-3 weeks! omfg...
Doubt very much the G70 will be here that quickly. For starters the G70 has a very very serious problem. Heat, PCB destroying heat. This will not be rectified overnight. Expect a launch maybe in August, but doubt very much in 2-3 weeks, unless of course manufacturers are selling with a watercooler, but heh, whats the chances of that?

I'll probally be skipping this generation, but it will be interesting to see how these cards perform.

ill be skipping this generation too, mid next year sounds like a good time to buy a vid card for me. should be great to have 90nm all ironed out and some cool new tech:)

Hi there
OcUK is launch partners with both nVidia and ATI on all product releases if we so wish to be.
Both companies respect us for what we do and the paths we take and we get the upmost support on both allocation and price.
The GTX is the top spec card as Ultra has been removed from the lineup. So you still have GT's but now Ultra's are called GTX. These will be in both 256MB and 512MB.
ATI will have X700 for AGP this month but sales are expected to be slow as its basically just a 9800 Pro with a few tweaks. But now OcUK is selling 9800 Pro's from £65.00 +VAT for a brand new card from an official ATI partner.
X800 XL's with 512MB are due in a couple of weeks but again sales are expected to be poor as the extra memory has little effect on performance but is a lot more money.
ATI will release R520 before NV release their super duper 32 pipeline cores which NV are confident will defeat R520 but these won't be seen until December in time for XMAS we imagine.
G70 is looking to be a great product, its going to be PCI-E only as both ourselves and NV agree that AGP has had its day and anyone who complains get out of the dark ages, technology needs to move on as quickly as possible and PCI-E boards are better and don't cost that much.
G70 pricing will be similar to what GT's and Ultra's were when they were initiall released.
If you look on OcUK you can now buy 6800 GT's for sub £200 +VAT and 6800 Ultra's for £225 +VAT, so amazing bargains to be had as most of the NV partners are clearing stock making for some good deals.
Everybody should check our site daily as we have some great deals in place time to time making it worthwhile to keep an eye on the sections. Who knows what deal NV or ATI might offer us next too pass onto customers?

I'm not sure this is actually a real problem. For starters someone claimed the entire range was single slot cooling solution. If the cards really were hot enuff to burn themselves, they'd be fitted with bigger dual slot coolers. I think the card that got reviewed was just faulty. Happens easily with engineering samples.
We'll see anyway.

I see a 512MB Sli compatible 7800 in my future. Now if we can get another sweet deal like the $299 BestBuy-BFG GT OC deal some of us got last year.
Again thanks go to pjstp20 for posting that deal.

Yeah, that was anand. I believe him, too. Also saw a pic of a single slot XFX G70 as well, with the good ole logo plate on the heatsink and everything (similar to their 6800 Ultra line).
Nevertheless, this gen seems very...underpowered. 24 pipes with minimal bandwidth increase over last gen? Almost don't see much of a reason to go G70 instead of dual 6800 Ultras, the SM 3.0 feature set is there already...

Yeah, no kidding. We (Zeero and I) are pretty much in the same boat and I'm worried more about the CPU than the GPU.
yep its going to take unreal 3 based graphics or a very insane graphics sleeper hit to make me worry more about the gpu then the cpu, as almost everything seems to be cpu bound these days. Who knows maybe oblivion will force me to look at a new graphics card, but i will wait until then to find out.

Does anyone actually believe 2-3 weeks for retail availability? That doesn't seem very likely to me.

Can't see it happening. The card hasn't been launched officialy yet, and usually they give out the cards for review a fair bit before they're available for purchase.

Too bad about R520 though. Oh well, G70 in a month will make me happy. :D
Gonna be a superb card for BF2 and Quake 4. :)
NVIDIA is pretty much in control now. ATI is slacking? :o

Yeah, thanks pjstp20!! I got one of those too. :)
It turned out to be an excellent purchase, $100 off retail price and then ATI went and completely botched their x800 release with no cards avail for retail until months later.
hehe.. best deal of the year. :)

I hope the 512MB 7800GTX cost less then this 512MB 6800 Ultra...

i think it should be like this:

I don't think so, in first place we're not that memory bandwidth limited, then G70 gpu's will have a very optimized architecture in order to perform well on features brought by NV40. SM3.0 and HDR run very slow on NV40. You can't just think about the number of pipelines, things aren't that linear, architecture matters alot and is the most interesting part of the gpu.
I still hope G70 will be WGF1.0 compliant.

I aint intrested in G70 at all. i sure it must outperforming the 6800* (*not the 68U)
i wuldnt upgrade to tht, i'd betta wait for the 32 piped beast.
as sumone said, G70 currently offers nuthin new for res 1280x1024 + all hi, compared to 68U.

no chance.
That feature is reserved as a sales point for cards due out in 2006.
It would also help if MS had finalised the requirements from a driver perspective for WGF 1.0 - they hav'nt yet and I doubt they will until we see BETA 2 this October.
AFAIK, all the cards from gf3 onwards are WGF 1.0 complaint.
Longhorn will require WGF 2.0 compliant cards..correct?

I thought DX9.0 is the minimum spec for Win LongHorn .. WGF1.0 (previously DX9.0d) cards will be granted extra features.

Yeh a GOOD DX9.0 Compliant card is min. requirement for longhorn.
Now where did DX9.0D coem from. DX9.0C will b the last of the wgf 1.0 compliant. ?? afaik

Yes and No - LH will ship with both WGF 1.0 and 2.0 included - 2.0 is reserved for hardware thats ships on or after the LH timeframe.
The controlling factor in all this is the LDDM (Longhorn Display Driver Model) which has two stages: basic and advanced - here is a quote from a well worded explanation:
underlying WGF is the Longhorn Display Driver Model (LDDM). With it, Microsoft is aiming for that ideal situation of "graphics just works." For example, if you upgrade a graphics driver today, you typically have to reboot the system. One example of the "graphics just works" mantra is one of LDDM's goals of allowing installation of graphics drivers without needing to restart the system. LDDM will actually ship in two stages. The first, called "basic," supports current generation graphics hardware: shader model 2.0 and 3.0 capable hardware. The second generation of LDDM, "advanced," will support hardware features that ship on or after the Longhorn timeframe, but will work with the new features in WGF 2.0.
So there's no requirement for WGF 2.0 compliant hardware when LH ships, I do suspect however that with the pace of the GPU industry we will see the hardware long before the software.
Hope this helps.
