Hi there
ATI R520 is due in October and is looking like it will ship with 32 active Pipelines. It will have a very high price tag and will be extremely hard come by as ATI have had to move onto a new process and yield rates are very very poor so expect long delays on this product and it will no doubt be an extreme flagship product. However it will kick the G70's ass but will cost a lot more and will be hard to get hold off.
ATI Crossfire technology is their version of SLi which works by an external cable linking to cards together and at the moment the technology/drivers are nowhere near as stable as NV's SLi so ATI still have a lot of work to do.
nVidia on the other hand have G70 already in production. The GTX model will be shipping with 24 pipelines and we should have the product in ample stock from the best partners such as BFG, Leadtek and XFX in 2-3 weeks.

btw this Gibbo fellow is the guy who buys stock / chooses new products for OCUK. Basically is in very regular with Nvidia and ATI.
I seriously doubt it :hmmm:
the G70 shipping story i mean ..
so price will be floored for 6800GT and Ultras?? hahaha!! couldn't wait.
That would be great if true (the shipping soon part). Ask him if there will be AGP versions.
Makes sense, 24 pipes against the current x850xtpe's
and later a 32piped card against 32piped r520 (in oct)
Too bad about R520 though. Oh well, G70 in a month will make me happy. :D
Gonna be a superb card for BF2 and Quake 4. :)
NVIDIA is pretty much in control now. ATI is slacking? :o

Hard to tell .. the idea of early 24-pipe for nVIDIA & 32-pipe for R520 later can be convincing. the senario might be like this :
ATi was busy on X800XT refresh (X850) while nVIDIA was busy on giving last touches to SLI .. & after SLI proved to be successfull , ATi had to ease up on thier R520 schedule & get thier stuff in gears to counter it with thier Crossfire while nVIDIA already used that time to get thier next gen video cards - at least the high end part (G70) - ready for lanuch.
so G70/G70 SLI is to counter X850XT-PE CF for the time being .. & later this year R520/R520 CF to counter the G70's refresh . say G75.
this year's race gonna be an interesting one
This summer is gonna be awesome :D Quake4 and G70... w00t :D

I just think that ATI is having problems getting 32 bit and SM3.0 working right and or is waiting as long as possible to sell more of their current stock.
Crossfire will sell a few more old gen cards too, for those crazy enough not to wait for the next gen parts.
We'll see how fast ATI starts leaking specs if Nvidia launches this soon.
Nothing like a bit of competition to light the fires. :)
I think I prefer them to be in sync (same with the consoles). It makes the upgrade decision harder when they're on a different release schedule (imo anyway).
But why still no official anouncement from Nvidia @ Computex? :o

Whoa, I thought I had more time to save!
I finally made up my mind, and will be buying the G70 along with a new mobo. But I thought they came out in a couple of months, not weeks.
Better start saving faster!
But why still no official anouncement from Nvidia @ Computex? :o
Ya it doesnt make sense, they have a working g70 so why cant they spill the beans already.

ATi isn't slacking, ATi is losing now and they know it. Maybe we'll see their much delayed R520 in January 2006 whereas the world will buy nVidia G70 products in July 2005!
If this goes as I predict this seems a lot like 5800 vs R300. R300 got released first, 5800 got delayed and turned out to be slower then ATi's R300. Could this be ATi's 5800?
haha dustbuster ATI card :D
I can see the photochops now :D
I bet NV is only releasing G70 GTX for trashing the X850XTPE, and the real joker 32pipe Gxx is hidden behind ready to be revealed when R520 is getting released.

I wouldn't suspect that ati would ever release a card that would be that slow under their new management. But I do suspect that their card will be faster then the g70 at a much later availability date. Meanwhile by the time its out as in most of us can buy it a 32 pipe version of the g70 with a higher clock will be coming out as well. Perhaps to also take a dent out of the xbox 360 sales. As much as i would love to see ati have a nvidia sized slip up a la the 5800, I just can't see it happening under their current leadership.
I will say this from a business management perspective. If nvidia releases a g70 in that time span and ati does have a much faster card in their sleeves as stated, expect a whitewash paper launch to try to take the wind out of nvidias sails/sales...
But if any of that post is true. It's going to be quite hard for ati to ever get the best bang for your buck crown again...for a long long time.
It's going to be an interesting 4 week period from now to say the least.

It doesnt surprised me ATI never learnt 3 years on from Nvidia's mistakes with NV30 and also their own mistakes with products delays. I think R520 on 90nm's very very poor yield are much worsen than NV30 did on 130nm 3 years ago and Nvidia made just approx 4500 NV30 chips so I guess ATI will get approx 2250 R520 chips. R520 will mirror NV30 fiasco, a few months ago here was news about games publishers received a sample of R520 tested with PS 3.0 titles, reports of graphics glitches on R520's PS 3.0 hardware and maybe here could be possible that R520 PS 3.0 hardware probably not running at full speed. Also it will affect Microsoft Xbox 360, the R500 graphics chip are manufacturing on TSMC's 90nm, I think it will miss Nov 2005 launch.

Perhaps ATI should've concentrated more on getting R520 out of the door rather than making crossfire work.
Yep I reckon nVidia is going to hold onto a higher clocked G70GTX Ultra 512meg monster to deliver the knockout punch when ATI release R520.
my videocard is already obsolete after 8 months... :(

Yeah, no kidding. We (Zeero and I) are pretty much in the same boat and I'm worried more about the CPU than the GPU.
