I've got an old PIII 500 MHz sitting around uselessly since it's missing a video card. I would like to buy one and sell the entire system to a renter next door.
I notice rvvae selling a GeForce 2 Ti 64 mb in the sale forum, but I'm wondering if that's overkill for such an old system? I want an AGP 1x/2x 3.3V (non-compliant AGP 2.0) that maximizes the system. ATi, nVidia, SiS, 3DFX, Matrox, etc.

A geforce 2 ti would be fine for a system like that. Id say, dont spend more than $20 for a card for that system. rvvae's price is good for something like that. Itd suit it well, and if you threw a faster CPU in it later itd scale well.

The GF2 Ti would be perfect for that machine. Not underpowered like a GF2 MX, but certainly not overkill like a GF2 Ultra. For what he's charging, I'd go for it, it's a pretty good deal.
GF2 GTS, ti, Ultra, or any GF3... so basically any $25-$40 vidcard that doesn't have MX in the name... ;)
Definately a GF2 Ti card would do... curious, what motherboard do you have?

Geforce 2 Pro by Hercules can be found for about 30 bucks still on eBay, I'd check it out if I were you :).....one of the first cards with analog and DVI support :D
Well since the 7800 series is PCI-X only then I guess u will be limited to a 6800 Ultra or x850. lol
Actually, I'd prob go for a GF3 series.

Thats like asking to use a 6800Ultra with a P4 1.6ghz system. :p
Keep the Gf3 cards for the at least 1ghz systems but as for the P3/500mhz, the GF2 Ti card will do. :D

I remember in my P3 450 rig back in the day I had it paired with an AGP GF2 GTS and it played everything fine.
I remember the day when i used to have a P3/650mhz, paired with a GF2 Ti card playing TFC online on 56k, it rocked.
When I had a PIII 650Mhz I had a Voodoo 4500 :D

Sigh...I remember my Hercules Geforce 2 GTS. Awesome card, I'd get that one. :)

I don't know about a single 500, but my dual PIII 933 can push more data than my GF2 MX PCI can handle. If it had a AGP slot, I'd probably use my GF2 GTS or GF4 Ti4800. Wouldn't bother with a GFFX 5800 on a PIII machine.

Right on, as a GF3 scales like a GF2 but has pixel and vertex shaders, and can be had for about the smae price...
Wouldn't bother with a GFFX 5800 on a PIII machine.
Unless the PIII is at least 1.3ghz, then it could make use of the nv30's power... PIII cores around that speed pretty much function like any 1.2-1.6ghz tbird/XP/sempr0n...
My old PC had a Tualatin 1.33GHz. It had a 5700U @ stock speed. From various tests I made it behaves like a P4 Williamette at 1.6-1.8 GHz, save in memory intensive situations. Coupled with a GeForce5700U I could play Doom and Far Cry at 1024x768 at high detail with 30+fps in most situations.
Pentium IIIs below 800 MHz (especially if coupled with 66-100 MHZ bus) do not saturate a GeForce 2GTS, thus everything above is overkill unless it comes for a very cheap price :)

I concur, you should install a GF2 Ti, or maybe a GF3 if it's not more than a few $ more. Lol, I remember playing TFC, that was a good classic mod. Until I got my current rig, I was still gaming on a (gasp) K6-2 380Mhz, with 64MB RAM, and a Voodoo5 5500 PCI. I tried to tell my family to let me build the system, but they wanted IBM's great service and coverage. The big problem, we could never get the thing to even recognize more than 64MB RAM, like it was maxed out. I used that thing until August 03...man, was I dying.
