George Mikan passed away and thought it was appropriate to have this thread.

Great player and a lot of the current moves and rules we see are because of him.

His family is not too well off in today's day and age and Shaq has offered to pay all funeral expenses for the family, a nice gesture for a great man (being literal here).

R.I.P.

Indeed, RIP. Mikan has been called the Babe Ruth of basketball. He was certainly a pioneer and a champion. By all accounts an intelligent and kind man. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Sad to see a TALENTED big man pass- we don't see that much in Shaq-oops I mean - the NBA these days.

Are you implying that Shaquille O'Neal is untalented? If you are, you are simply proving that you have no understanding of the game and a total inability to assess talent. There has never been a big man with the combination of speed, size, and footwork in the history of the game. Go ahead and counter with, "he can only dunk", "he is just big and pushes people around", "he cannot shoot freethrows", etc... Unquestionably one of the top 10 players of all time.

This still applies now...........I'll give you speed (3 years ago), but that's about it. Footwork? I guess if you count traveling everytime you're right. I also learned yesterday that you can grab a basketball by both hands and pound it on the ground and it's not a double dribble! Must be his awesome talent.
The only talent he has is size...where was his domination yesterday? It is an insult to Mikan to be compared to Shaq.

Careful, your ignorance is showing. Why is it that people that know nothing of the game(such as yourself) insist on commenting through their rear end come finals time, but say nothing during the regular season. Go back to the "beta drivers" forum.

bkblk,
There is no need to argue/debate with trolls. The only reason he said what he did is to get a reaction.

True that. Thanks DOC, sometimes I forget who I am dealing with. I am sorry that your team did not win. I know all too well the agony of following a losing team. You can take solace in the knowledge that they will be there every year until Shaq retires and likely beyond at the rate Wade is progressing.

Please explain your basketball superiority Mr. bnkblk... I have said this for years about Shaq and obviously there are a lot who have the same opinion- did you read the ESPN article? I have participated in these forums for a while now- I don't consider myself a troll since it has only been 24 hours or so since I discovered Nvnews had a sports forum.

WHAT ESPN article? everywhere I've read says that Shaq is the most dominant player in the paint. Do you have any links to prove otherwise?

I am really sorry that we took this thread off topic.

My post was originally meant to compliment Mikan. He was a talented big man with a far more complete game than most big men today.

Do you know the difference in an editorial and an actual scouting report? Dude, that is some guy that is ranting about Shaq being with another team!

Jeez, man! I thought you had some REAL stuff.

Fact is, Shaq has taken a team that was nowhere NEAR the playoffs, and made them a contender. Fact is, he's the reason why the Heat got as close as they did!

The ESPN opinions are no different than what I stated- did you actually read it? He may be dominant, but don't attribute it to anything else other than his size.....

Sorry, Shaq couldn't have done it without Wade. Wade deserves a lot more credit. Shaq did not make Wade.........Wade saved Shaq this year. I'm done posting on this subject. If Shaq was a humble guy like Tim Duncan, maybe my attitude would be better. But Shaq's attitude and arrogance stinks and it kills me to see people buy into it.

I read it, and as I said, that's is an opinion...not facts.

No single player has been able to take a team to winning levels as easily as Shaq has save perhaps Wilt Chamberlain.

Even the mighty Michael Jordan needed a player of Pippen's calibre before he was able to start winning.

Shaq may not be the greatest at everything he does, but he is the single best center in the game today and for the past decade or so. Not only that, he DOES make everyone on his team better when he plays.

Wade deserves all the credit he gets and I have been singing his plaudits since last year when the NBA and media basically had a Lebron/Carmelo orgasm while Wade proved to be the better player by taking his less talented team to the playoffs and winning a series. This year he again proved he was better but again Lebron got all the credit.

There is not much people can knock Shaq for other than having a big ego. But then what sports star of his calibre does not have an ego? The fact that along with his ego Shaq also does a lot of good in his community and for players of yesteryear like Mikan shows that perhaps there is more to him than just making money.
