Copying windows xp. how?

Im buying a new hardrive to replace my 40gb maxtor hard drive . How do i copy all the files including windows xp to the new hardrive? I'd like to make an exact copy of the hardrive so i wont have to install everything again.
btw. im getting one of those seagate baracudas. i heard theyre very quiet.

You need an utility like Symantec's Norton Ghost or something like that. Powerquest makes another one, but I don't remember its name.

yeah, thats the one. I think the Powerquest one is included with Partition magic Pro or something like that, thats what I use.;) Demonized, I suggest you just back up the stuff you want moved and you can't replace, then on the new HD install your OS and move your backed up data from there. Not only is it safer, but it gets rid of any probs you had and eliminates any chance of incompatibility or complications of that sort..;) :D For me, it took less time to do that, than moving everything over to a new HD.

Check dis out.

Put the hard drive in normally. Don't worry about copying anything yet. In Windows, copy everything using Copy and Paste. Take out the old hard drive, set the new one to master.

Put in your WinXP CD. Boot off it, go to the Recovery Console (hit F5 I think as setup runs). Run fixboot on C: ...

and VOILA! It should work fine. Friend of mine did this with WinXP Home and it worked fine. :p

will that process make winxp put all the settings to default?

no.

fixboot just puts the bootloader back in place.

Registry, programs, etc. al are all on the new drive exactly as they were on the old one.

You can do what Baron does, or get Seagate's tools, and you can do a copyover of all your stuff including MBR at once...

Seagate's included software will do everything for you. It's amazingly simple.

the newest version of ghost supports writing images to cd under dos, as well as supporting all types of file systems. That's if you want to keep your settings for winxp as well as your progs.

From what I hear, WD's does not, and I'm wondering if Seagate does the same.

I decided to do a fresh install. Is there a way to copy the the settings from the previous installation.?

well I know theres a 'file and settings' wizard within xp that used for just that, but I've personally nvr used it...

The WD Data Lifeguard SW worked with my IBM Drive. It was also the only SW that would partition my new WD800JB drive. I'm currently building an XP Pro build on a spare disk, and if it turns out ok, I'll use the WD Data Lifeguard disk to copy the current disk to my WD drive.
