Hi, I have a great problem!
I have just Upgraded my system to an Athlon XP2400+ , with a MSI KT4 Ultra MoBo.
With the 31** series drivers all was working fine, now with the 41** series I have this problem:
Before that X is loaded pass at least 5 minutes!!5 minutes!!!An eternity!!! In the first times I thought that the system was locked and I pressed reset , but I have tried to keep it running for some minutes and at the end it have loaded X.
This isn't the unique problem, DigitalVibrance and ShadowCursor doesn't work!! Help me plz!
here the XFree86.0.log file:
Thanks for your answers!

Yeah, i have the exact same problem.. I think i get teh 2d slowdown as well when im finally in the damn wm (after 7-8 min). I also have a geforce 3 ti 200. running slack 8.1, kernel 2.4.19 AND (same problem in 2.4.20).
I havent tried the RenderAccel thing ... it doesnt appear that its fixing anything anyways.
If you here anything.. let me know.

Yes, I (and others I think) am also experiencing long start-up times for X (about three minutes in my case).
I've tried watching my XFree86.log file growing (using tail -f), but can't really spot what's causing the delays.
It's very irritating. Especially if I have to to re-start the machine after a driver crash
5 minutes here to load X with 4191. I used to think that the 30sec with 3123 driver was bad. 2880 was fine. Well, back to "nv" drivers... My guess that there is a bug in the VIA hardware you need circumvent
hardware:
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+
MSI KT3 ultra2 (VIA KT333)
[GeForce3 Ti200] (rev a3)
software:
kernel: 2.4.19 and 2.4.20 (no agp_art compiled in)
Debian sid
Xfree86 4.2.1
did some more poking:
1. During X startup, the machine would respong to ping but not to ssh connections.
2. fiddling with agp options didn't help.
3. changing from console to X takes 10-20sec also.
4. an strace log showed a few places where system was jammed:
.....
20:12:37.612535 open("/dev/nvidia0", O_RDWR) = 7
20:13:39.820227 old_mmap(NULL, 67108864, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_SHARED, 7, 0xd8000000) = 0x406e0000
...
1+ min openind /dev/nvidia0 hmm...
...
20:13:39.821502 ioctl(7, 0xc0144632, 0xbffffc80) = 0
20:14:09.985621 ioctl(7, 0xc01c4637, 0xbffffc3c) = 0
...
...
20:14:40.190496 ioctl(7, 0xc01c4637, 0xbffffc5c) = 0
20:15:10.251498 write(0, "(--) ", 5) = 5
...
...
20:16:10.650544 ioctl(7, 0xc0144632, 0xbffffc08) = 0
20:16:39.783266 ioctl(6, 0xc01c462b, 0xbffffbe4) = 0
...
...
Unfortunatly those ioctls seem undocumented
I've added the entire strace log as attachment.
..and due to size limit that attachment is broken... ...trying again with some redunant lines removed..

Can you guys post what external connectors are on your boards? This is likely due to the kernel module trying to probe for attached devices (monitors/flat panels/etc) when it shouldn't. So I'm curious what connectors are on your boards, and what devices you have connected to those connectors.

mine has monitor (hd15) , flat panel and tv-out. only a crt monitor connected via hd15, Sony G500.

My Geforce 3 has standard monitor port plus TV out, and my waiting time at startup is about 5 mins. I also have a VIA motherboard, which is starting to look like a common theme.

I have an Abit KR7A Via KT266A. and an MSI Geforce 3 ti 200 video card. The 4* series drivers took about 10 minutes to load, and even when it did, it was extremely slow and unreliable. When i reverted back to 3* series nothing was wrong. Yes, i set up the XF86Config file correctly. I've read the howto about 100 times. This is really annoying.
I thought this driver release was a april fools joke:) Apparently and thankfully it wasn't!
4349 and the following option workaround the extremely slow startup:
Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "DFP, TV"
In other news, 4349 seems solid and fast, even with debian and xfree 4.3 :)
Otoh, I think that even when probing for DFP/TV it should not lock the entire computer, I guess this bug will spawn lots of "4396 crashes" messages when people are just impatient.
