I was just wondering, as I often am, and came up with YET ANOTHER question for all you l33t know-it-all's. :D

Now that we are seeing 400GB HDDs or even greater, why don't manufacturers build drives that fit into the optical bays?

Wouldn't this increase the number of tracks per sector and hence increase the possible storage on the HDD? This would also contribute to heat-spreading due to the increased surface area.

This is just a random brain fart.. but it kinda makes sense to me. I know that the current trend is to make everything as small as possible, but I find it pretty reasonable since most people use mid-ATX form factor.

Comments, insults, tomatoes?

Larger drivers would make them louder and possibly slower since the head would have more distance to travel to read the data on the disc.

Rule of technology is smaller and faster...

Not to mention it would require more power as well.

I think the real reason is that most people don't need 6 terabyte hard drives... lol Most people are fine with a 40GB. Hell I've hardly used any of my 74GB.

I have almost right at 50 gigs in mp3s, over 40 gigs of backed up DVDs, and around 10 gigs of applications on my 200 gig backup drive. Of course due to the butt-screwing policies of HD manufacturers that "200 GB" is actually 166 GB.

WTF?!

Egad.. I only have 20GB TOTAL! :wtf:
Moreso, less than half is being used.

I would like to be able to backup my DVD collection to disc and then store the drive somewhere nice and safe. Unfortunately w/over 400 discs to backup I'm going to need a huge drive(s).

Wow, you really got screwed :p

My Seagate 7200.8 200gig formatted to 186 when I had a single partition. Now I have 3 partitions (system, games and data) + 20gigs unpartitioned space for Linux when I get around to trying that out. I lost less than 5Gb on the 180gigs thats partitioned and formatted. Multiple partitions gains back a LOT of that lost space.

Here's a big one (1 terabyte):

I'm currently trying to find out if it's any good since I'd like to get one for work.

That's getting there alright, but holy sticker shock batman! It'll be a few years yet before such a device gets truly affordable. Hopefully before all my DVD movies start to degrade to the point I can't read them any more. I need to back that stuff up. :)
