Hi, I am wondering which one of the following two video cards would net me faster performance in PC games such as HL 2, Doom 3, Empire Earth 2, and Rome Total War (to name a few) in my secondary computer: GeForce FX 5700 Ultra or Geforce 4 Ti 4600? Thank you!

More info is needed. What are your system specs (CPU, mobo, memory, etc). Depending on those factors you may or may not have a bottleneck.

Ah...It is a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ OC'd to 3000+ With 1 GB of Kingston HyperX Memory. It's an nForce 2 Ultra 400 Mobo.

(And an Antec 500W Power Supply...so juice is not an issue)

Oh yeah...and BTW...I already own both these cards along with an ATI 9600 Pro so $$ for the comp is not an issue [but the 9600 Pro has been commissioned to my dad's comp])

Ok, well at resolutions around 1024x768 both cards will likely be fairly close in performance on your machine. If you want to play at 1600x1200 then the 5700U will be faster but probably not by a huge margin over the 4600.

Yeah it's 1024...thanks a lot man!

My vote for the 5700 Ultra out of those 2 cards :)

If you could a 6600 or 6600GT would work great in your system too. Can get 6600GT AGP cards for around $150-$160 now at NewEgg.

I think he already has both cards but was just curious if the 5700U would be much faster than the 4600. But yes, if he does have both (even with his system that is a bottleneck) I'd use the 5700U.

Oh ok. Yes then the 5700 Ultra. It does have basic DX9 support and really is not a bad card at all. The Ti4600 is great card too, just no DX9 support so it would not render some more advanced pixel shaders as well as the 5700 Ultra would :)

Good point regarding DX9. HL2 and Doom3 would be reason enough to want to use the 5700U. I was focusing more on performance.

My FX 5700 Ultra performed better than my Ti 4600 in all cases, in any machine tested. No contest. Benchmarks, UT2x00, Doom3, HL1, all favored the 5700. Athlon 1600+, 1700+, 2500+ 3000+ all favored the 5700. Doom3 timedemo was 10FPS better on the FX 5700 at any given setting. YMMV.
