I've never used the program, but I've heard it is very popular. The author stated that he was receiving pressure from an unnamed company to pull the plug.

Hmm...it would be a shame if the dvd decrypter developer suddenly became careless and some l33t hax0r stole the sourcecode and leaked it all over the net. The anonymous company would be pretty pissed off no doubt.

I think that will be very good news for movie and TV studios who released their programs on DVDs and also this news will be massive blow to Linux users.

Windows have many DVD softwares to view DVDs and Linux dont have proper DVD software to view DVDs, on Linux, it cant view DECSS ecrypted DVDs that Windows software such as PowerDVD, MediaPlayer and others can. Linux will require DVD Decrypter to decrypted DVD to watch the films.

Maybe this has something to do with the PSP. Sony is trying to sell UMD movies, but its cheaper and more convenient to buy the DVD, convert it, and run it from the memory stick.

Oh yeah, I forgot, this is a good thing:

With teh EVil DVD Decrypter gone forever, DVD piracy will cease, the poor starving people in Hollywood will stop loosing money, and will be able to lower their prices. We will see $3 dollar DVDs and $2 dollar movie tickets within a year! WOOT.... I am so excited.

People with unix can always do this:

/* efdtt.c Author: Charles M. Hannum <root@ihack.net> */
/* */
/* Thanks to Phil Carmody <fatphil@asdf.org> for additional tweaks. */
/* */
/* Length: 434 bytes (excluding unnecessary newlines) */
/* */
/* Usage is: cat title-key scrambled.vob | efdtt >clear.vob */

#define m(i)(x[i]^s[i+84])<<
unsigned char x[5],y,s[2048];main(n){for(read(0,x,5);read(0,s,n=2048);write(1, s
,n))if(s[y=s[13]%8+20]/16%4==1){int i=m(1)17^256+m(0)8,k=m(2)0,j=m(4)17^m(3)9^k

*6^c+~y;}}

Ummm...there is a more elegent/quicker/easier method for ripping and burning...(I'm giving this information based on people ONLY making backups of their OWN DVDS!)

1. Download AnyDVD http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
(this is a free to try, pay for full version (unless your enterprising) on the fly dvd
decrypter.) Basically, it ticks all your computer/windows into thinking all dvd's are
non-encrypted, and does it on the fly.
2. Use NeroVision Express to Rip, Convert, and Burn the movie...Easy as that :)

I'm not saying it's the best way, but it's they way I prefer to copy MY DVDs (not RENTALS :P)

So do you have the t-shirt? I know they stopped selling those pretty quick though. :D

Actually they are encrypted with CSS (Content Scrambling System,) DeCSS is name of the (in)famous first ever code to decrypt them. Most people who use linux use mplayer (different than media player) to play DVDs, and they always do so using libdecss as another layer to be able to decrypt on the fly just like regular dvd playback software does in windows. DVD Decrypter has never been ported to linux, it has always been a windows only program.

Anyone heard of http://www.ratdvd.dk/ ? I just found out about it today and am looking into what it is/isn't.

Yes, I read this earlier today... Rumor is he was getting pressure from Sony :(

Which would make sense as DVD Decrypter is usually the first piece of this kind of software to be updated to bypass any current release of Sony's ARccOS DVD protection.

You won't here much talk about this, because I believe if you can talk about how to defeat ArccOS, that means you must have broken the user agreement/law that one will not reverse engineer copy protection..
