I'm going to eventually buy a Barton based Athlon XP. I've never bought anything from AMD before. Do both OEM and Retail AMD CPU's come with heatsinks? I think the heatsinks are not pre-attached--Anyone know for sure? My Pentium III's heatsink/fan was already attached.

Last but not least - Are the stock Athlon heatsinks sufficient for light overclocking?

retail comes with amd's heatsink fan. oem is cpu only. same goes for all intel cpus also. i'd wouldn't get the retail, you can find the oem chips cheaper and a good heatsink/fan can be found for $20 and the overclocking ability it will provide is worth it. check out newegg.com they have great prices.

Okay, cool. Could you recommend a quality heatsink?

can't go wrong with a thermaltake 7+ and some arctic silver 3

I bought an ALPHA PAL8045U for my Athlon.
Awsome HSF. 50 bucks though heh

I have a Thermalright AX-7 heatsink with an Enermax 80 mm variable speed fan. Keeps things cool and without getting too noisy. :)

Thermalright SLK800 (http://www.kdcomputers.com/eui/prime/browse/component/78.htm) is my current favorite

That's a sweet heatsink, but i'm looking for one with it's own fan.

Why do you want it to have its own fan?

Try this (http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=review&dId=416&dPage=1) in the review they say it can be had for $15 US

Im pointing you towards the yellow one ;)

I want it have it's own fan, because i don't want to end up paying 50 bucks for the CPU cooling. Plus, it's one less thing to assemble.

What kind of fan do you want?

 I have no idea what i want. I've never had to buy a heatsink before. I just want a fan/heatsink that i can overclock with.

Well between that and the fact that you want the fan included, there aren't a whole lot of HSFs that satisfy your demands. The Volcano 7 and 9 are the only two that come to my mind right now. Not that those are bad HSFs or anything, but there are much better ones for overclocking.

Does noise level matter? If it doesn't, then I'd suggest the Vantec Tornado 80mm fan as it has the highest CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) rating of any 80mm fan out there.

Anyone know the Vantec website? The Vantec SF6025L Stealth Double Ball Bearing fan looks interesting.

nevermind, it only puts out 12 CFM.

Right...........Home Depot.........lots of computer components there........

Legolas, please stop thread-crapping, it's getting really annoying.

Iron1384, other than the Tornado I don't know of any higher-performance 80mm fans; so I'd either go with a plain old 80mm case fan with a CFM rating of about 30-35 or you could go with the 60mm Delta fan. I know it has a reputation of being loud, but I can tell you from personal experience it's much quieter than the Tornado.

What do you all think of the Thermaltake Dragon Orb? i've been using that for a while... i like it, but a bit loud.

I've found the Vantec Tornado, but i can't locate the delta fan. I've seen it used with heatsink benchmarks. Know the delta website, or a place that sells the delta fan?

What do you think of an Antec 80mm Smartfan? It varies it's airflow from 28 to 45 CFM, using it's temperature sensor. I plan to use this with a Barton-Athlon XP.

You can find the Delta I mentioned (50 cfm) and other 60mm fans. There's also a link to 80mm fans on that page. They're a good company, I've bought stuff from them before.

I think that sounds like a decent fan, although I'm not sure how well its temp sensor will work on a heatsink. If it uses a built-in diode to measure temps, then it's likely to run into the same problem the fan on the Volcano7 ran in to, where it is too far away from the heat source to take accurate readings.

Thanks for the link. The fan I talked about didn't have an external sensor probe, but there is an Antec SmartFan that does have one. http://www.antec-inc.com/f_smartfan.html It's the first fan listed. Too bad the specs aren't listed yet
