Is it just me ( and my ISP ) or does the little Pricegrabber price list slow the frontpage load to seahorse like speeds, been averaging about 18-15 sec's to load the page because of that thing. Any workarounds for that?

same has been happening here. i think it's because it's not being hosted at nvnews.net. the problem is though, the rest of the page wont load until that is finished loading :'(

edit: slows the forums down a lot for me, even sometimes it will give a timed out error and refuse to load the rest of the page.

Yes, Mike is aware of this but like Kamel says it's not the nV News server at issue but Pricegrabber's.

I was about to post something about this... Would it be possible to pull it onto your server till they get this solved, or something? It's putting a bit of a delay on the loading of every forum page...

Loads instantaneously for me. I wonder if it might also be browser specific? Or if there are updated needed to make it load faster?

FWIW, I love the add-on :)

Hopefully you'll have more things on a rotating basis showing in the price list eventually but I love the current setup.

OK, thanks saz, that might help narrow things down for all of us. What browser do you have, and what browser do other's have.

It's lagging up the load of the web site on Mozilla 1.7.2 here...

I think it is brower specific Sazar. IE loads it fine with no problems or wait, while FireFox slows down and has to load up that section first.

By George, I think you guys got it. Best I can guess, it must have something built in that uses a feature present in the Mozilla/IE code base (a tad annoyingly) which IE doesn't support... Course IE 6 is the older browser.

THX, until this gets resolved, I can just use IE to browse here...got both browsers on my comp :D

It is not the pricegrabber ads that was slowing us down it was the E3 video's. A forum had linked to them and they were being downloaded at a large volume. I had to take them off the server for a while.

i can provide a mirror with a 60gb/month quota if you like. it wont be able to handle all of the traffic, but it may illeviate some load.

The pricegrabber ad is still slowing things down for me. When I load any page on the forums, the page loads up to the point of the pricegrabber ad and then the ad slowly displays the first column and then the second column and so on... and when the ad's finished loading up, the rest of the page loads almost instantaneously.

Isn't it possible to put the pricegrabber widget in the bottom instead of putting it on the top of every page?

Yeah i'm still getting slow loading times :| .. add this to my slow-a$$ dial-up connection & you get the whole picture.

You're on dial-up too!?? I thought was the last one on Earth to have one of those!

*ahem* ...not really. :p I do have a 128kbps ISDN connection though (I can only use it at nights).

I'm having the same problem as well, this new Pricegrabber thing is bad news, it has completely slowed down the forum loading times :(

Same here. Each page takes a few seconds longer to load as it grabs the prices.

I know this topic is kinda old, but it still happens to me. Looks like every price in that list updated individually from the pricegrabber server and it takes time...
On IE it waits for all of'em to update before showing the rest of the page. Firefox loads them one after the other. Only after all of them are loaded, it loads the page. Maybe it's because my DNS server sucks, maybe because i'm not from the US (takes time to connect to pricegrabber for me) I don't know. But for whatever reason it's still takes too much time :(

P.S. on the fornt page, I need to wait for the AMD+Intel prices, then it loads the news, and then it finishes with the nVidia cards prices, so it's definetly between me and pricegrabber server

After tweaking FIrefox with firetune...everything is fine for meI'll second that. I haven't run Firetune in a while and have had the slow loading Pricegrabber ads...I just ran Firetune again (got latest version) and now nV News' Pricegrabber ads load instantly.

What was the settings you used with firetune?
what computer/connection speed?

Clay

I used fast computer/fast connection. I realize that not everyone fits into that category but it is what worked for me.

didn't help me, i've got it set to fast comp fast connection, and my comp is a 250x9.5 mobile barton, and i've got a 7mbit connection

It's not so much a server loading it slow per se, but rather that there's a delay where nothing will finish loading until after it has finished it's thing.

There's probably some annoying "feature" it makes use of in Mozilla and Firefox to pull the test a line at a time, display it in human readable form, and then left move/align the text...

If it could be put to the end of the page load sequence, rather then the beginning, people could browse while it's doing it's thing. Not sure if the forum scripts could be modified to make the frame (if it's using one) that contains it, load last rather then first...

In the interum IE doesn't see this problem. I guess Firefox has a means around it, though for peeps using Mozilla, there is no Firetune. Someone mentioned an edit one could make to Mozilla's mini-registry (probably what Firefox is doing, as it included a tool for this) to get rid of that... I'm not sure about manually editing the Mozilla registry (so as to turn this feature off), or which line/entry it would be...

it has to do with the rendering engine, simple as that. they decided to take a different approach to rendering in the gecko rendering engine, and because of it, there are some descrepencies between the two. sometimes one is faster than the other, that's all.
