Hi, I've been having problems with Mozilla Firefox since my 9800 Pro died.

I bought a MSI 6600GT VIVO. The problem seems to be with some animated gifs. This doesn't happen with Internet Spyware Explorer, but I need to use Mozilla Firefox for obvious reasons (I don't want my computer to suck all that spyware, adware, etc; on the internet).

So, I need you to test something for me. I've been posting this issue in Firefox forums and it seems that I'm not the only one with the problem.

Try the link I'll provide you and tell me if your CPU usage goes up to 100%:

http://img91.echo.cx/img91/2874/firma5hf.gif

Don't forget to post what system and drivers you were using.

Mine is:

CPU: AMD 64 3000+ (754)
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
MEM: 1GB Supertalent DDR 500
VID: MSI 6600GT VIVO
S.O: Windows XP (32 bits) SP2

Thanks a lot.

PS: I posted this in drivers section because I actually think it's a bug with NV Forceware. Disabling hardware acceleration for animated gifs and cursors fixes the problem.

Interesting, I tested it on Melchior and peaked at 95% usage, averaged around 80. Using Firefox 1.0.4 and ForceWare 71.89. Things that make you go hmmmm.....

Yep, if you have an AMD 64 you'll notice that your computer is lagging when watching that kind of anigifs. With a P4 with HT your CPU will peek@50% so you'll be able to use your system without noticing there's something wrong.

I don't want to disable hardware acceleration because it brings some issues with games :(

But there's people that doesn't have this problem, so, maybe, we can find the answer to this problem here :)

60-100% in Firefox, very low in IE6 :(

Athlon XP3000+/6600GT/77.30

I find http://www.eclipse.net.uk also lags for me in Firefox, even though it has no animated gifs! (works fine on my prehistoric 266MHz laptop with Firefox)

Hmm, for me it fluctuates between 36 and 86 percent in time with the animation. Weird. My specs are in my sig.

Interesting. My results are shown below.

I'm running the following browser versions:

IE: 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Firefox: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4

My system specs are in my sig.

IE (between 0% and 8%)

Firefox (between 30% and 70%)

This has been a problem with Firefox for a really long time, whether it's using animated .gifs or Flash. I've had it happen with both NVIDIA and ATI cards, and neither IE nor Opera exhibit this problem, which to me makes it pretty obvious where the issue is.

As long as you have IE configured properly and keep it updated, it can be every bit as secure as its rivals.

With IE its 0-3% in firefox its 38-48%. System 1 in sig. That is really wierd. I think its time to try Opera :)

Mine is getting 14-18% using 71.89 driver, on my P4 computer

If the problem does not occur for some, though, then the origin of the issue doesn't seem obvious to be Firefox. Take newls1's results as a case in point. True, it's still higher than IE but not by much.

I only get between 2-4% CPU usage with your .gif.
This is the (optimized) version of Firefox that I'm currently using:

On my P4-based system with the FW 77.13 beta driver using Firefox v1.04, my CPU usage fluctuated between 16% to 51%. The avg. usage was 37%.

It was with Firefox v1.04 having 20 tabs open with Azureus uploading in the background. Of course, an AV program was running its real-time protection and the Zone Alarm firewall was being run too.

It didn't happen with mi 9800 Pro, that's why I'm complaining about this.

And why disabling hardware acceleration fixes the problem? Couldn't be a Forceware issue?

That's odd. I just uninstalled Firefox, cleaned up, etc and installed the build you're using and my results changed but still bounce between 30% and 60% instead of 70%.

I wonder if it is related to AMD procs somehow?

on the AMD proc part, it can't be. firefox used to run great when i first installed it awhile ago. my specs havn't changed at all (just added the 6800gt, firefox still had the .gif bug).

the whole reason i overclocked was to get the .gifs to play alittle better, but they still top out a 100%

I wouldn't rule it out because using Deer Park (Mac Firefox) doesn't exhibit the same problem. While I can't quantify it in terms of exact CPU percentage, the browser doesn't grind to a near halt when attempting to scroll with animated .gifs on a page, like it did under Windows.

XP 2800+, X800 Pro, Cat 5.6, Firefox 1.04, 0-7% cpu usage
XP 2800+, X800 Pro, Cat 5.6, IE 6, 0-5% cpu usage

Now that is really interesting. So from your testing the issue seems to only be with the AMD 64. Of course many other variables could be at play but this might be something to consider.

Alternatively it could be ATi vs nVidia?

I get the same problem on my Athlon XP 3000+

I get similar results..

When using IE, I only get between 2 and 4% usage..

God, I thought I'm the only one with this.
I changed for nvidia a month ago and was (and I still am) surprised how bad it performs when there are huge pics or animated gifs on a page. You scroll and you have 100% cpu usage. Using latest Mozilla.

Certainly it wasn't the case with my 9700pro.
Check out my other pc with an old voodoo3000, cpu usage 0-2%. LOL.

I get 0% - 4% on my machine with the .gif with both IE and Firefox

I'm using 77.30 and Firefox 1.0.4
