i've read the performance difference between 8xaf and 16xaf is just about 2fps. is this true?

ye, teh gram is a lazy man.. i'll just assume it does have a minimal performance impact. why else would everyone be using 16xaf?

it's pretty minimal. Going from trilinear to 16X is probably only like 5FPS at most if you have decent video card.

8xAF and 16xAF gives no performance hit for me in the cs:s VST.... :D
Ah, but how much of a visual impact does 8x versus 16x have?

it depends on the landscape in the game. for a game like giants:citizen kabuto where there's always a vast landscape beyond you can notice the difference between 8x and 16x.
