I am curious how to enable HDR lighting in Farcry?
I have the 1.3 patch as well as a GeForce 6800 GT and 9.0c.

Is it a special toggle?

Thanks for the help.

You can choose from 1-7 IIRC , 2 for best IQ & 7 for best performance.

NM, found it...

Just in case you are a happy owner of the GeForce 6800- or 6600-series graphics cards here is what you should do, provided that you have FarCry version 1.3, DirectX 9.0c and NVIDIA ForceWare 66.81 drivers:

Set all Graphic settings to “Very High”;
Disable anti-aliasing (as NVIDIA GeForce 6800 hardware does not support multi-sampled 16-bit float point render targets);
Type ”r_hdrrendering 7” in the console (or add "r_hdrrendering 7" to the game’s shortcut) when you launch the FarCry;
Enjoy.

Nope, 2 gives the best performance, 7 gives the most bloom causing slower performance. I'll be using 2 once my GT and Zalman arrives. :D

2 gives the best performance because it totally disables the light rays, which is, IMO, essential for the HDR experience.

To enable the OpenEXR method of HDR being used in FarCry you must have a GeForce 6 series video card. You must first make sure Anti-Aliasing is disabled because this feature is not compatible with AA. Bring down the console and type “\r_hdrrendering x” (where x represents a number which indicates the type of HDR lighting). There are 11 different types of HDR lighting in FarCry. We have found that the number indicates how the light rays being cast from the HDR lighting are rendered. For example, if you type “\r_hdrrendering 2” we have found this disables the light rays. If you type “\r_hdrrendering 10” or “\r_hdrrendering 11” you will find some very unique ways of rendering light rays. Most people have found, and we agree, that “\r_hdrrendering 7” provides the best quality.

I have a semi-related question concerning the 1.3 patch and new features.

(Sorry if this seems like a thread hijack, I don't intend it to be.)

From the Far Cry 1.3 readme...
-----
* Normal Map Compression. Requirements: NVidia: Geforce FX Family or better, ATI: x800 card or better. This feature is disabled by default. To enable it, type r_TexNormalMapCompressed 1 in the console after loading a level. Enabling this feature during the game may take some time - the PC may appear to freeze. This variable will not be saved when restarting the game. Enabling*normal map*compression will have prolonged execution the first time running through a level due to initial compression phase occurring in real time through the level. Subsequent reloads of the same level will yield better performance and therefore we recommend that you run any benchmark twice and to take the second of the two runs for benchmarking purposes since this most closely represents the usual user experience.
-----

Is this feature like the old "vising" of a Quake map that could be done once and not needed to be done again? Also, like the old "vising" of a Quake map, can you download this in advance from another source?

You can check out the various HDR effects and performance here (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=44643&highlight=forceware+comparison)

7 is optimal. problem is that features like hdr and ultrashadow are ahead of their time. they really can't be handled with good performance by today's cards. age of empires 3 which uses hdr is said to completely kill a 6800ultra with hdr on.
