I must admit, saw an ad about someone wanting to trade his/her ATI 850XT PE PCI-E for a 6800 Ultra PCI-E. Are they pretty equal in term of performance and feature? Should I trade? Sounds very interesting to me in a way.

The 850XT is probably a little faster in D3D, the Ultra is probably a little faster in OpenGL. The main thing you'd be giving up is SM 3.0, HDR, etc. but if you don't use any of that, it won't matter to you.

The X850XT is quite a bit faster in just about everything. Games like Far Cry are smoother with fewer fps dips. The X850's filtering is also better (little to no "shimmering" textures. The 6800 Ultra is faster in OpenGL and supports FP16 and SM3.0 which will be used in future games. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Which games do you play primarly?

quite frankly i dont see the point. if your happy with performance of your 6800 ultra then why bother with the hassle? i think you would kick yourself if you did the trade and it turns out a ton of games are using sm3.0 and hdr.

Well, I think I will stick with what I have (even though sometimes the grass looks greener out there), just don't want to be sorry later on.

Nope the X850XT-PE is faster , but the 6800U has some better features like SM3.0 & FP16 blending.

I had a x800 PRO VIVO flashed to 16 pipes running at 555/555 and i can assure you that you wont notice a performance gain. It may have a few FPS more in some benchmarks and in FarCry (though i didn't notice - played Farcry on both cards) but it'S definatly not worth giving up SM 3.0 (might be usefull sonce those games seem to pop up atm) for an unnoticable performance gain.

If ppl compare 6800U and x850 XT PE and say the x850 XT PE is faster you have to keep in mind that we talk about extremely small differences here. Difference so small that they aren`t noticable when gaming. If you have a 6800 U and it'S working well i'd say keep what you have.

i thought the x850 was alotttt faster than an ultra, like 20% more

Nah. Only about 10% in a few apps (like Half Life 2). The 6800 Ultra is still a lot faster in OpenGL from what I've read.

yah I agree.... mostly in Half life 2 is where Ati cards owns the most... an x850xtpe is almost as fast as SLI 6800 ultra's in Half life 2 lol..

but anyways, the only reason that guy wants to trade his card for ur ultra is that he wants to SLI :)

wait nvm, he can later crossfire his card too lol.

but keep the dang card!

O yah, this guy at my school was selling his 9800xt for 50 bucks
stupid lil bro didnt wanna tell me about it..otherwise..it would've been mines hehe. sold m y9800xt for 300 a few months back and grabbed an ultra.. I ould love to have it back hehe looks so nice.

I'm trying to trade it for a 6800 gt or ultra because im going to dual boot with linux and nvidia is the card/drivers to have with linux.

(little to no "shimmering" textures.

The shimmering is a lot less noticeable with newer drivers. In fact, it's almost nonexistant in most of my games that had noticeable shimmering now. :p It's probably to the point now where it's a bit pointless to bring attention to.

Thats awesome. I remember that was one thing that helped my decided to go with a X800XT after my GT died.

yah I agree on the shimmingering thing, it's pretty much gone with the 77.30 :) although I can see a tiny bit, but the next drivers should kill it hehe

I love how the creator of the thread made his decision, but the thread continues on. =p
