More poor reporting again, there has never been a British Royal Airforce, it is simply the Royal Airforce. But what can you expect from such a shoddy "news" service.

"The Open" on US shores refers to the US Open tournament, hence why "British" is necessary to differentiate the two. But what can I expect from a halfwit ****tard like you?

Gee..

I don't see a shred of supporting evidence in that article. He doesn't provide outside sources, just basically says "It was so".

I'm not that gullible.

There is no "The Open" on US shores

http://www.usopen.com/

The US Open name is The US Open, not my fault that people in the USA shorten the name incorrectly

Now compare that to the the actual Open championship

http://www.opengolf.com/

The Open name is The Open, not my fault that people in the USA lengthen the name incorrectly.

Which is exactly what Vamp was pointing out in his post, but you seem to have forgotten that ;)

How does it feel losing an argument against a, what did you call me again ?

Is there such a word as quarterwit ? :D

The added adjective is to prevent confusion with all the other Royal Air Forces out there, such as:

http://www.raaf.gov.au/
http://www.airforce.mil.nz/
http://www.rcaf.com/
http://www.rtaf.mi.th/eng/
http://www.scramble.nl/jo.htm
http://www.scramble.nl/sa.htm

With so many Royal Air Forces around, it is wise to ad an adjective to them.

Also, when you are talking about someone else's something, you usually add an adjective to remove confusion. For example, if I said "The Army" you would naturally assume I meant "The US Army" since I am from the US. But, if I were to talk about "The Army" you would not know I was suddenly talking about the Turkish Army...until just then, when I added an adjective.

I assume you go down to the pub now and again? I assume there is only ONE pub in all of the United Kingdom? What did you say about shortening things? You lost me at incorrectly...

It's like talking to a wall with some of the thick f*ckers around here

The only way you "lose" a argument with a moron like zak is that he is too f*cking stupid to understand what people are talking about anyway. For example talking about military equipment when he has no idea what he is talking about. Or holding strong opinions about the US car industry when again he proved he had no idea what he was arguing against. But sure ignorance is the champion tool of the moron.

The only problem is of course is that those are actually called The Royal Australian Air Force or Royal Netherlands AirForce etc . So if you add the country to the front you get

The Australian Royal Australian Air Force
The Netherlands Royal Netherlands Air Force

The only one called just Royal Air Force is actually ours, and because it is unique does not need the British tacked on the front.

I cannot believe I am agreeing with Vamp on this, but he does know his military stuff, as i have found out to my cost before :)

Considering we were agreeing about the same thing Vamp I believe you have just shot yourself in both feet and underminded our RAF arguement :p

You still fail to understand the purpose of an Adjective:

The part of speech that modifies a noun or other substantive by limiting, qualifying, or specifying and distinguished in English morphologically by one of several suffixes, such as -able, -ous, -er, and -est, or syntactically by position directly preceding a noun or nominal phrase.

The adjective was added to ensure that NO confusion exists. The adjective was capitalized because British should be capitalized. It is like saying my car, or the closest pub. There is probably no pub named closest...but you would never decry the use of the adjective. Why not?

Adjectives are descriptors, and they aid in understanding and prevention of confusion.

The most visible of these is the CIA-backed actions recently undertaken by the Mujahadeen el-Khalq, or MEK, an Iranian opposition group, once run by Saddam Hussein's dreaded intelligence services, but now working exclusively for the CIA's Directorate of Operations.

You can't just come out with that and not provide a shred of evidence. No un-nammed source within the CIA? No money trail? No nothing? Come one now; they wouldn't tolerate crap reporting like that at my High School, let alone an international news source.

To the north, in neighbouring Azerbaijan, the US military is preparing a base of operations for a massive military presence that will foretell a major land-based campaign designed to capture Tehran.

Our great military force set to invade Iran consists of....

...250-300 troops. Mostly there supervising construction of facilities and providing guard detail. Military exercise in the future? It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a base in strategic position in the ME. Bahrain and now Azabaijan (however the hell THAT'S pronounced..). This is definatly a positioning move by the DoD, but it doesn't in itself signal a military operation against anything.

And does anybody really think any sources within the US Government would even take a dump on this guys shoes, let alone give him *ANY* kind of information?
