I'd go for the 9800 SE, but only if your brave enough to risk the card, as you can probably flash that to a 9800 Pro.
What price are you getting these at, anyway?
Im getting 90 Quids i mean pounds for it which is reasonable considering hardware is expensive in our part of the world......

is it the 128bit radeon 9800se, or the 256bit 9800se? I'd probably go with the 9800 se because there's a chance it will be soft-modable.

Yeah, if its 256, go with the 9800 SE. You'll definently get better preformance out of that card.

Hmm...that's a bit trickier. Its still possible to soft-mod the 9800 se, but only to a 9500 pro with a r350 core. Still, it preforms better than a 9600 because of the 8 pipelines, but there's only a 53% success rate on the mod. You'd be safer with a 9600 pro. However, if you want to risk it, go with the 9800 se.

A 9800se is the same as a 9500pro and in most cases it will be faster then the 9600256mb card.

256MB on a 9600 Pro is really pointless
That much memory is only useful in 1600x1200 with AA+AF, and the card is too slow for that.
So I'd go with the 9800xe.
