unwinder said the 7800GTX doesnt have any pipes to be unlocked.

That's slightly different from saying that there aren't any disabled/redundant pipelines though, is it not? As in ... it depends how such non-functional pipelines had been disabled.

Unwinder did it before, he can do it again :)

i know intel has in the past lazer etched fetures out of there processors so that no one could unlock them.... cough yamhill cough cough ....

No he specifically said this.

I can tell almost with 100% waranty that there are only 6 pixel quads (i.e. 24 pipes) in G70 (NV47). There is nothing locked you can unlock.

Seems absolutely clear cut to me.

There's nothing to hope for.. Unwinder said there are no pipes to unlock... I know its somewhat disapointing ((Well not to me really since its 10,000+ Fillrate part on its own) But thats just the way it is..

Precisely, this is what I'm getting at. If this is done in hardware *before* the BIOS gets to know about it...

[...] I remember emailing nvidia saying PLEASE give
us nvidia fans a card to run with ati back
when my 5800u and 5900 were getting there ass
kicked. [...]

So that's why NVIDIA released the GeForce 6 and 7 series of of graphics cards! Who could have guessed? :D

Ahem... suppose Nvidia releases a 32 pipe monster card in August or, let's say, a month after whenever R520 is released... how does that affect the 7800GTX prices? Will we see a 650-700USD 7800Ultra graphics card? Or will we see a 600USD 7800Ultra graphics card with the 7800GTX getting pushed down to 400-500USD range?

ok if there are 32 pipe cards waiting in the wings.. we are gonna need some very fast memory...1.4 or 1.5 gddr3 ...are these even availible yet ?.....anyone know what the status of these memory chips are ...

Yes; Samsung even has 1.25ns in mass production.

From the looks of it just went into production a couple
of months back so it may take a bit for nvidia or ati
to get it. It also could be a price thing to.

New=Highcost

If the 7800 is a 32 piper nvidia would
have closed it off so tight not even a crowbar
would get in. :D

So what if the real possiblity becomes true? R520 will kill ATi (for 2005's high end video card war)? We're going to have nothing but.... 7x00 series talk for the next 9 months? Sounds good to me!

Maybe the rumour mill will switch to XBoX360 talk.

R520 specs look much more impressive

if you look at it on paper, the 6600gt looks like it has much better specs than the 6800ultra, 500mhz core!! OMFG!

you absolutely can not go by specs, ever. the ram will be roughly the same, so you're just left with the core. it's all about the technology and design, has little to do with specs.

R520 has to be faster. Why? Because people can and have already bought 7800GTXs. ATI will not make a GPU that is still in development to be slower than 7800GTX, a gpu that is already availible, that would be either stupid or pathetic don't you think?

X850XT PE owners like to brag how powerfull their card is versus the Geforce 6 series. But duh, it came out after 6800 ultra, so obviously it would be faster because ATI had something to beat.

Lamers can keep buying video cards all you want, you can never win, their will always be a better and faster card. ATI will out do Nvidia, Nvidia will outdo ATI. It's a Cycle that will never end, that is untill people stops buying GPUs from either.

What choice do they have? Say, hypothetically, that R520 can't cut the beat G70 no matter how fast they clock it, what are their choices? Ditch R520 and hope that R580 is half-decent (kinda like NV35 over NV30)? Wait another full product cycle? Most of R520 will be set in stone now, it's not like they can change their minds and have something new available in four weeks.

ATI *have* to launch R520 in some form, no matter how sucky it is compared to G70. For a start, their CEO has pretty much told their share-holders that they will, and there'll be a lot of very fired-up lawyers if that turns out to be a lie.

Are you implying that we should just boycott the high-end segment from both companies? You seem to dislike innovation. Maybe these companies are innovating TOO QUICKLY in your opinion? I'm just failing to understand your logic here. And what is this about winning? Winning what? I personally don't see any competition there to win.

And yes, I'm currently saving up for a high end rig my self. You can go ahead and settle for the 6600GT or whatever card you are running now. But in '06 I can guarantee that card will AT BEST HALF THE PERFORMER that it is now. Get a card that doubles the 6600GT, or a card/ dual card setup that QUADRUPLES the 6600GT in performance, and the longevity increases.

Keep in mind that the initial specs of the R520 included support for WGF1.0 That means that when Longhorn and WGF2.0 come out the R520 will probably offer superior performance for games utilizing the WGF API than any older card.

So while you are ready to upgrade your card, I'll be ready to drop the resolution one notch and enjoy 60+ fps for a while to come, untill I have to drop the resolution again, and then once more for the last time (I play at 1600x1200, and by the time 800x600 is stressing my system with maxed IQ and AA/AF, then it's time to upgrade for me).

Longevity- sure it is expensive. But that is why the high-end segment has that name. You don't see everybody with a Ferrari, but that doesn't mean that we should all boycott the sports car, does it?

-end rant. ;) :D

Every longhorn review/preview etc ive read, theyve mentioned, not to haist up in buying HW, just wait till final longhorn specs are out.

So its not like, Some people, like me, have stopped upgrading (i got every gf gen, leaving the 256 and FX). its just that it doesnt seem corret right now. Right now my CPU is the Bottleneck, and i want a X2 4400+. if i get that with a new GFX card + mobo (obviously has to be SLi mobo), ill end up spending a lot, and maybe miss out the longhorn upgrade. that'll be sad.
but if i get me just a cheap/good CPU either A64 3800+ or X2 4200+,that + my current gf6800GT will last me till longhorn, and i can upgrade with WGF2.0
So the 2nd option one makes more sense. I still am in 2 minds, if either ATi or Nv come out with a GOOOD AGP soln, (that will save me many many bux), ill get a nice 24pipe card and settle till longhorn.

No doubt Hi-End cards give u the benefit of long run, but this time, the track is changing, its gonna be WGF2.0. and i really believe, how ever fast the cards will be, people will hafta get a new one with longhorn release.
