Seriously guys...is it really worth it? For example if one 7800 gives you 80 fps on average at your desired settings what is the point of paying double to get 110 fps. The human eye can't tell a difference anyway right? Not trying to flame just trying to understand why the big spending.

if you have the dough may as well get the best.

What's the point of you getting the 6800gt instead of the vanilla 6800? It'll play all of today's games...

i don't get upgrading from 6800ultra's in sli to 7800's in sli, but as far as the 7800gtx's in sli, it's the best deal going right now for performance. you know those cards are still going to be able to play modern games for another 3+ years without a hitch i would say.

Hell if I was rich I'd buy 'em too. ;) But I'm not, so I look for deals. Like a 6800NU for $159.

Instead of blowing another $600 on a card [I don't believe in SLI in the first place, and the 7800 series just proves what I've thought all along, next-gen card will outperform old-gen SLI + it'll have new features] I'd put to a nice 24 inch Monitor, a D-Link Gaming Router ($150), an Mx518, powerful speaker system...etc etc...I'd defintely put that $600 somewhere else in the system. This GT performs at 1600x1200 plus some AA for the majority of games out there, I can't even imagine what a SINGLE 7800GTX can do. Besides, SLI doesn't seem to help much with WoW, so bleh. :p

Lets say you've got money for all of that and more. Then what? I think most people that buy these cards are already satisfied with other system parts or going to buy the best parts for it anyways.

i hate when people say that the human eye can only see 30 fps and cant tell the diff between ex 50 and 60 or 60 and 100 etc etc. the fact that movies are played at 30 fps doesnt matter. unless you have really bad eyes or dont konw what your looking for, you will be able to tell the difference between 100 and 150 or even 150 and 170.
no offense

anyway id buy them if i had the money to blow, bigger e-penis i guess and better performance...

yea, uhmmm, they have to shoot movies a certain way to make the 24fps acceptable for them. some movies have too much action and it reallllly sucks IMO (it actually almost makes me sick when i'm at the theater). when it's on dvd and it's 60fps though, that's generally acceptable for something pre-made and designed for your viewing pleasure. for something that's real time though, there is unusual movement and high speed looks which aren't seen in movies and such.

That is not the case in my experience. Old Gen SLI outpeforms my 7800GTX setup under "Many" circumstance. Let me quote myself

My observations. ((These are based on 1600x1200 comparisons))

6800GT SLI verses 7800GTX

World of Warcraft: Same Speed
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: 6800GT SLI
Far Cry: Same Speed
Far Cry HDR: 7800GTX
Splinter Cell: HDR: 6800GT SLI
Doom 3: 6800GT SLI
Half Life 2: 7800GTX
3dmarks: 6800GT SLI have significant advantage

Here we go again.

at 1600x1200 4x/16x fear gives me 40fps. You know what 2 6800 Ultras do? About 20. Playable? I think not.

Battlefield 2 at 1600x1200 4x/16x gives me about 50fps. You know what 2 6800 Ultras do? About 30fps. Not exactly my idea of playable.

Splinter Cell CT is hardly playable with 2 6800 Ultras at 1600x1200 8xAF.

FarCry with HDR at 1600x1200 8xAF? Don't even try it on 2 6800 Ultra's.

If you want the best image quality possible, at the highest resolution, you buy the best. Last generation does not cut it for me on the latest games.

This is SLI verses SLI right?

For many of us this is a hobby, and we like to have the latest and greatest. If there were a 7800 GTX AGP version available, I would buy one. However, I won't upgrade my computer to PCI-E just for that card. I'll look at upgrading again next year when the GeForce 8800 GTX arrives.

Yes I'm talking 7800GTX SLI vs 6800 Ultra SLI.

Ya.. I have seen some nice boosts going from a 6800GT SLI to a 7800GTX SLI

Not a new card.. but new games :D I can't live without my AA/AF... and unfortunately, when my 6800 Ultra's were near their For Sale/Trade deadline, I was running 2x/4x. Now I'm back up to 4x/16x and I couldn't be happier... that is of course... until the 7800 Ultra comes out :D

Will you upgrade to a 7800 Ultra if your 7800GTX SLI setup can still deliver the IQ/Frames you're enjoying right now?

I thought the GTX version was supposed to replace the Ultra

example 7800, 7800GT, 7800GTX

It depends. It depends on the games that are out when the 7800 Ultra hits. If I'm not able to get a good framerate with AA/AF at 1600x1200 on some games, then I may upgrade... I'm thinking I won't though. I have too many things to pay for this summer.

Whereas I understand your concerns for yourself about purchasing two GTXs for SLI..that is your own. Your original thread title looked like flamebait hence the title change and its better way to comminicate and exchange ideas I think.

Warning though, no flaming, no nastiness etc towards others will be tolerated and the offending member will be banned etc.

Thanks

Hmm. Well is the performance hit really big when going from 1280X1024 to 1600X1200? If so maybe I underestimated how much power is needed. Besides that I play at pretty much the same settings and get what I believe to be more than acceptable framerates.

ChrisRay

Someones idea of playable framerates is subjective. One thing is definately true. If you're used to slower framerates. You tend to accept them easier. I'm even like this.
