View Full Version : Is it worth returning my 6800gt sli for a 7800 GTX?

I'm currently using 6800gt sli but I can still return them and change for a g7800gtx which won't cost me any more money. Do you think it is worth it? Because I read the reviews and it seems that 7800gtx has a less 3dmark 05 score than 6800gt sli and I'm not sure about the in-game performance.

Do you play 3Dmark? No? Then go with the 7800GTX. Better perfomence in games, better features, better IQ.

It's been proven a single 7800GTX is faster than 2 6800 Ultras, so given you have 2 Gt's you'll get an even better bump. If it won't cost you anything go for it.

Unless you want Transparent AA. You will get similar performance. In Many cases 6800GT SLI pulls ahead of a 7800GTX at high resolutions with AA/AF due to bandwith restrictions and superior vertex performance in AFR mode. A 7800GTX will not offer you a substancial performance increase on its own. So unless you're really into transparency AA it will be a downgrade in somecases and side grade in other cases. The cases where SLI does fail ((HDR in SFR mode for instance, A 7800GTX can be significantly faster))

My observations. ((These are based on 1600x1200 comparisons))

6800GT SLI verses 7800GTX

World of Warcraft: Same Speed
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: 6800GT SLI
Far Cry: Same Speed
Far Cry HDR: 7800GTX
Splinter Cell: HDR: 6800GT SLI
Doom 3: 6800GT SLI
Half Life 2: 7800GTX
3dmarks: 6800GT SLI have significant advantage

i wouldn't hesitate... then later on if you want a nice boost you can just buy another 7800gtx and you're there. would make the most sense IMO.

Do it. Then get another one in 1 day :D

That's what I'm thinking about now. Actually I almost hit the "submit order' button for two BFG 7800 gtx. But then I asked myself which brand of 7800 gtx is the best now? Anybody knows? I know they just came out and only a few brands are available, so maybe there are not so many choices. Better oc capability and quite is what I'm looking for

One thing is certain. 2 7800GTX significantly outperforma 2 6800GTS, But at first you're not going to be blown away.

Go with BFG, eVGA or XFX

I'm surprised to see YOU saying this Chris!

if i were him i'd take the 7800GTX no question asked . it has more features , enhanced architecture which is desgined with future games in mind , works better in games that are not SLI supported , enhanced shader performance for games showing weakness in GF6 gener like CMR series & top of all that he can upgrade with another one anyday since changing it now wont cost him anything.
oh & i forgot to mention less heat & less power consumption & more system stability.

I'm just saying from a performance perspective he is not going to see much difference and if he's not interested in transparency AA he's not going to see a difference. Its much of a sidegrade rather than upgrade and in some cases a in many ways a downgrade. There are obvious advantages to a 7800GTX over a SLI system. The power/heat thing being the biggest and transparent AA. But there are also several advantages to a 6800GT SLI setup. Specially if you're a hardcore bencher. ((Futuremark junkies)) I myself havent experienced SLI stability issues though. So I cant really say I agree with you there.

I think its entirely fair to give the guy a good idea of what to expect. I just dont want to see the guy make a replacement and then end up disapointed because he expected more.

The reviews I've seen typically have a GTX outperforming 6800Us in SLI. Especially in games with HDR.

"Only" in Far Cry which which uses SFR which is incompatible with HDR. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Lego Star Wars both run HDR faster in AFR mode.

Here's how I see it:

Right now, performance between the two is about even

7800 is future proof with new features

One 7800 can turn into TWO later in the future, while you will never get more performance out of those two 6800Gts

Two GTs normally cost more than a 7800 though, so you might lose a little money there... not much though

*holds onto his 6800gt AGP* 'I'll never let you go, baby!!'

Sucks, I'm tempted to rebuild this fall, but x360 is coming out too....confussssionnn. Is it worth upgrading from my setup (see sig) this fall, I don't think there'll be many games that bring my system to it's knees

I didnt run into much trouble too , but i was talking about general issues like some game issues when running a game in SLI mode. i had some issues in games including Doom3 which thankfully fixed with the new drivers.
also getting the right SLI profile to work esp for new games that are still unsupported & even with the supported ones .. stuff like this etc..

I think I would swap it mainly for Transparency AA modes, power and heat redux and future addtion of a second GTX when prices drop.

Actually, you should be getting back about $100 if you are paying current market prices, right?

Looking at MikeC's preview, which BrianG has just bumped back up on Front News Page, the transparency AA looks extremely good to me. However, if I had two GTs in SLi I would be good for sometime to come in present and upcoming games. That transparency AA does look nice tho! :D
