I have an X800 Pro installed in my computer, and I have catalyst 5.6 installed. In certain games (Call of Duty, Half-Life 2, The Sims 2, etc.) the graphics do not display properly. During gameplay there will be white/gray, blinking lines and boxes that mask the actual graphics of the game. I originally experienced this problem with catalyst 4.12, and I have been upgrading drivers ever since but the problem has not been fixed. The problem occurs on both maximum and minimum settings of the game(s). What's going on, and how do I fix this?

It sounds like the card is going bad to me. You may have to RMA it.

Espically if the problem persists though all drivers.

If the card is going bad, then why am I only getting errors in certain games? The majority of the games I play are still rendered correctly, and I can put the detail settings all the way to the max and experience no problems. (Guild Wars, WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, etc.) Any suggestions as to what I can do to see what the problem is and possibly fix it?

Because the games don't stress either the graphics cards GPU or memory enough to cause artifacts. Warcraft 3 and MoA:AA are not very taxing games. I'd RMA it. I remember that the artifacts in MoH:PA demo was the first signs my first 6800GT was dying.

I was hoping for suggestions to find a problem, really. :\ I'm going to try popping my video card in one of my other computers, since I have plenty, and see if I get the same issues.

Download a program called ATI Tool. Run the Artifact Scanner. If it detects a problem then the card is most certainly defective.

Hmm ... I've done a bit of research and it seems my problem could very well be a DVI flat panel display issue. ATI's page has a whole section dedicated to troubleshooting this problem, and some of the symptoms describe the things I'm getting exactly.

Okay, it doesn't appear to be an issue between the card and the monitor. I'd like to ask some questions about ATITool, though.

1. It doesn't appear that the card renders the cube in ATItool correctly. [here (http://www.undeadcheese.com/images/atitool01.jpg)]

2. I ran the artifact scanner like I was told, and my question is how long is it supposed to last? I ran it for about 11 minutes before I grew impatient and aborted it (no errors had been found at that point), but how long should I let it go?
* EDIT: Okay, it appears that it *is* detecting artifacts.

3. I asked it to find the maximum clock speed for the video card's core and memory and it popped up with an error (Init of findMax: Subsequent images are different. Please report this bug.) [here (http://www.undeadcheese.com/images/atitool02.jpg)]

4. As it tried to find the max core/mem, it appeared that it was constantly underclocking itself (the numbers kept decreasing). [here (http://www.undeadcheese.com/images/atitool03a.jpg), here (http://www.undeadcheese.com/images/atitool03b.jpg), here (http://www.undeadcheese.com/images/atitool03c.jpg)]

Based on these things, what would you suggest I do with the card? RMA? (click the links for screenshots)

those are some serious graphical artifacts. I'd RMA it if thats still an option.

I've been reading through ATI's return / warranty policy, and I'm wondering if they'll fix problems with artifacts? Here's a quote from their site:

"Here is a list of examples that likely DO NOT require warranty service.

System restarts to a black screen after installation.
Display corruption.
Random system hangs.
Game or Application performance."

First of all don't try using ATI Tool to find your max overclocks when right now you're just trying to see if the card is messed up or not.

Let the artifact scanner run for about half an hour. If the counter doesn't reset during that time no artifacts were detected and the card is likely not defective. There could still be something else wrong with it that doesn't show up in the form of artifacts when testing the 3D accelerator portion of the card but at least you'll know that piece of it is working alright.

In the settings I have it set to "Beep on artifact," and the program beeps a lot during the scan, so I'll assume that there are, indeed, artifacts. My question is, on the warranty service request form, where it asks me to describe the problem, do I just say that it's creating graphical artifacts?

Oh so it DOES fail the artifact test? If it beeps during the test and that counter keeps resetting than yeah, sounds like it's hammered.

I would indicate in the warranty request form that you are getting artifacts playing games (describe them) and also put in there how you have run the ATI Tool artifact scanner and that it also fails that test. That should do it.
