despite the terrorist attacks of this week in London, F1 decided to continue with this weekend's race, although undoubtedly the events will weigh heavily on the spectators, teams, and drivers, and there will be a minute of silence before the start of the race. better to move forward then to show any weakness, so it is good that they decided to go ahead and race.

as usual, this thread will contain race spoilers, so those of you who don't watch the race live, be warned, results will be posted.

de la Rosa fasted in Friday practice; too bad for McLaren that he is only the test driver. however, JPM and kimi are in 3rd and 4th, so they are pretty fast, too. if they can continue this for the rest of the weekend, and not suffer any technical glitches, then things may be looking up for McLaren this weekend. three Toyotas and both Red Bull cars are in the top 10, while Alonso is in 7th and Schumacher is sitting in 10th. both BARs were well back, with Sato in 19th, whilst the Saubers were 16th and 17th:http://www.itv-f1.com/Silverstone_news.aspx?type=SILVERSTONE_NEWS&PO_ID=33408

this may be yet another tough race for Williams BMW as they are still having set-up problems. yet another reason for BMW to bail out from their relationship with Williams?http://www.itv-f1.com/Silverstone_News.aspx?Type=SILVERSTONE_NEWS&PO_ID=33418

Alonso is satisfied with his practice, whilst Schumacher will not make any predictions about what will happen this weekend:http://www.itv-f1.com/Silverstone_News.aspx?Type=SILVERSTONE_NEWS&PO_ID=33416 and:http://www.itv-f1.com/Silverstone_News.aspx?Type=SILVERSTONE_NEWS&PO_ID=33415

again, Kimi had to change an engine, and will lose 10 spots. if this continues, McLaren will hand over the championship to Renault without giving much of a fight, since they keep shhoting themselves in the proverbial foot:http://www.itv-f1.com/Silverstone_News.aspx?Type=SILVERSTONE_NEWS&PO_ID=33422

Alonso looks good gor the pole, and another boring victory if no one can challenge him:http://www.itv-f1.com/Silverstone_news.aspx?type=SILVERSTONE_NEWS&PO_ID=33421

Williams: decide soon, Honda engines or BMW for next year:http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=33423

Ferrari's woes continues, as Rubens manages only a 6th place, whilst Schumie was in 9th. Alsonso grabs the pole, with Button in 2nd and JPM in 3rd, so it should be a good start. Trulli, in 4th, should slow down the rest of the field as he goes for his usual Sunday drive. JV had a good qualy, and is sitting in 10th position (how long he'll be there is anyone's guess) but at least he out-qualied Massa (in 16th), both BMWs, which are continuing with their problems this weekend ikn 11th and 14th, both Red Bulls, and Kimi, who was penalized and will start in 12th. it would be really fun to see Kimi go through a weekend without blowing an engine, since that mclaren is really fast and he could challenge Alonso if he didn't have to pass half the field first in dorder to get back into his proper race position.

Wtf kimi's engine blow again?yes, the mechanics had to replace the engine after the final practice as a result of a faulty oil pump. Kimi is getting pissed about his bad luck, saying that it is destroying any chance that he could win the championship: http://www.itv-f1.com/Silverstone_News.aspx?Type=SILVERSTONE_NEWS&PO_ID=33435

As usual, a messed up qualifying. In the last few races, particularly the driver who starts second is there courtesy of a "monkey" lap (or Raikonnen's problem) and not sheer pace. Looks like Button this time is on a lighter fuel load, so he might do a Trulli and hold up everyone else behind him tomorrow. There were some funny news however that cheered me up somewhat. First of all, i'll quote F1 Racing's article that "Both Saubers were running with a brand new front wing the Swiss team had flown in from the factory overnight. It seemed to work for JV, but not for Massa who was 16th" That was a good one but seriously, new wings? They probably flew the old wings again and drivers thought "this should be an improvement so..." and they improved without knowing the truth :p Nice to see JV ahead of Massa again. I don't think he stands a chance to stay with the team but if he can own Massa for the rest of the season i for once will be glad :D

Pitty that BMW (through Sauber) are already ahead of themselves (see Williams) without even being involved yet! I said a week ago that the sensible thing for Williams would be to go back to their previous configuration and looks like they partly did:

http://www.f1racing.net/en/news.php?newsID=92234

So, Webber uses the latest chassis, Heidfeld the old one. Considering that those two are usually close in qualifying, there doesn't seem to be a huge difference between the two cars. Others though seem to disagree. I'll quote Sam Michael: "The new bodywork, introduced in Magny-Cours, is a result of our aggressive development programme, which to date has delivered significant competitive gains. However, pushing hard sometimes means problems will arise"

Eh? Significant competitive gains? More like significant additional problems but nice to see he is in joyous mood. I wouldn't mind seeing them drop out of the race early, that would put them out of their misery :(

More funny (or should i say trash) journalism too since every "expert" is surprised Alonso got the pole here. Truth be told, Renault have done quite well until now in terms of developing the car (although they are second now behind McLaren instead of miles ahead of everyone), better that i thought they would at that stage of the championship but still, this is Silverstone we're talking about. As much as people like to talk about Renault all the time, the core team is still Benetton, their headquarters are still in England and that track is still one they know pretty damn well so, wtf? No surprise they went well although Alonso never had very good results here. Again Fisichella is miles back on a track that he knows well and always is very competitive. He reportedly had some small issues with the car but 0,7s? Either he's on a different strategy or that car is not the same to Alonso's i just don't buy it that the guy forgot to drive in one year :thumbdwn:

Over at McLaren, initial reports (on Raikonnen stopping) were saying that it is a minor glitch, definitely not an engine problem. Coincidence or selective journalism? It just reminded me of another situation when one of their test drivers had a huge crash. One site was reporting that the accident was luckily not a big deal and there was only superficial damage to the car and it would be shortly fixed while the other one was talking about a very heavy impact. The pictures showed on the second report actually agreed with the first one heh. I mean, excluding the fact that the car was a complete write-off, damage was indeed minimal :p The same happened with a serious Monza accident that Michael had about a year or two but that's another story. One more example. Just look at the story at ITV here:

http://www.itv-f1.com/Silverstone_News.aspx?type=SILVERSTONE_NEWS&PO_ID=33440

They say that "Theissen was less sanguine, citing Williams’ lacklustre form so far this weekend as further evidence that the chassis is not up to the job – and that the team is lacking nothing in the engine department".

Is that what he said? Well, the big change lately was the updated aero package which i'm told is made by the chassis constructor  and Theissen merely said they had no engine problems. Just look how they're trying to word the whole thing and create attrition between Williams and BMW and tell me this is objective journalism   Who's writing that ****ing ****?

Anyway back to McLaren, the positive thing about Raikonnnen's problem is that at least he will now revert to the newest engine specification so he will level up with Montoya again and both will run the same spec. Not that he had a problem completely outracing him in France with the older powerplant but... Hell, i told you guys they were breaking engines in testing, i guess they couldn't be lucky the whole season. Whatever, starting in the midfield shouldn't be such a big handicap for him. He'll again start heavy on fuel and will wait to find an empty track and then push so as to pass as many guys as he can through the pits  That's racing for us all  I hope his problem doesn't put the Williams boys again on the dirty side of the track for the start of the race just like France.

what a strong race for McLaren: 1st for JPM (also his first victory for the team) and 3rd for Kimi, who climbed back from a 12th starting position; 2nd went to Alonso. this would have been Kimi's race had he not suffered engine problems; in fact, the championship race may well be a lot closer if Kimi didn't have engines issues these last few races--that car is fast, even with a lot of fuel onboard; sadly, it's just not 100% reliable, as Ferrari was in the previous years when they were dominating the sport.

Button started 2nd, fisnished at 5th, a disapointing day for BAR in general, especially since Sato had starting problems at the grid formation, and ended the day in 16th. Fisichella in 4th, whilst the Ferraris finished well off the pace in 6th and 7th (Schumie followed by Rubens); their problems continue, as they cannot seem to find the pace of the top teams, amazing since they dominated the sport for the last 5 years. rounding out the points was Ralf Schumacher in 8th.

disappointments: BMW continued to suck. is it the engine, chasis, areodymaic setup, drivers? last year, they were 4th in the constructors, this year they're currently in 5th, and have struggled greatly. JV: started 10th, ended 14th, behind his team mate, after having problems in the pits. Red Bull never seemed to be in this race. surprisinly, only 1 car retired from this race, Karthikeyan's Jordan.

in two weeks, the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim! :D

dang man...is Ferrari not gonna in the "preferred" garages next year? IIRC, the top 4 constructor's get preferred treatment and special engagements, and the best pit.

French GP Vs British GP: 1-1. That was a crappy race once more. I'd say the last two races have been possibly the weakest of the season so far. Shame, because i love that track and with the aid of rain we usually got some good racing in previous years. Well, finally Montoya won but he still did it with his team-mate being KOed once more for a chance of a win. Just when i was thinking that at least at that race he finally had the upper hand in terms of sheer pace (and the fastest lap), Raikkonen beat that as well on lap 60  Basically JPM had a chance in France, he lost it, now he had a second one and he took advantage of it. Well done, but he will need more engine failures for Raikonnen or sth else in order to stand a chance of winning again.

Raikkonen had the speed but once again made a brilliant display of his non-existent overtaking capabilities. I don't think he is superb for passing a Jordan or a Sauber or whatever from the middle of the pack at the start. He's driving a much better car, he HAS to do that  In any case, the "experts" can keep bjing him as much as they want: Iceman, fireman, ****man, whatever. But just like in France, he couldn't pass ****, he came behind Schumacher on the track and only overtook him in the pit-stops. Later on, he came behind Button but JB had more chances to be passed by his dad than Raikkonen. Same stuff again, wait for the pit-stops, add a bonus by Fisichella and you got yourself a third place. He made a move on Alonso earlier on but at a time where he was completely empty of fuel and Alonso had just come out of the pits heavy with fuel? Meh. Even that move, he had to make it look "good" by steering the car abruptly. Who is he kidding? Regardless of their problems, those mother****ers still have it good. Breaking an engine in qualifying doesn't give you zero points, just a penalty which can be partly recovered. More than that, if someone looks carefully at this season, competition is by far worse than in the past few years: Williams are non-existent, BAR has just started getting some decent results and that with only one driver, Ferrari is junk (although quite competitive with a six-pack as long as that includes the Minardis and Jordans), Toyota started well but has fizzled out. Realistically, there are two teams only that can take the first four positions based on pace alone, excluding bad luck, incidents etc :thumbdwn: McLaren's mechanical problems are a minor detail really. Excluding Montoya who was out in France, they never had a problem in the race so far. In a way, they are still very lucky within their bad luck. But they are unreliable, their time will come.

Renault could have come out with a win but they made a few mistakes here and there and it finally cost them. Montoya thinks that the race was decided at Maggots on lap 1 and he's probably right. Also, after they both had done their pit-stops and their pace had dropped, for some reason Alonso was loosing half a second per lap to Montoya and that happened for a couple of laps. He also wasn't so lucky with traffic. Don't know what he thinks about Trulli but for me, JT definitely gets my vote for the "mobile chicane of the year" award :p The guy's damn good at extracting one fast qualifying lap with plenty of fuel in, but the car is always slower in the race and he ends up making a train behind him. Toyota have been lost in the last few races but a big update is on its way. It should come at their home race (Hockenheim).

Williams will be spending the break in Spain trying to sort out their crappy updated aero package. Looking at their times it appears that the newer chassis is about a tenth or two quicker than the old one. Mind you the old one hasn't been getting any attention for some time now. The Williams boys were slower than both Sauber and RBR cars. In a way i wish they could change the engines at Sauber right now in the middle of the season and then with the same chassis and drivers we would see exactly who's engine is junk and who's not. It's idiotic though that whenever Williams is underperforming, everyone's trying to blame BMW, but when for example Ferrari is crap, the culprit has got to be the Bridgestones.

One last thing about Fisichella. Although the Renault boys are keeping pretty quiet about it, i think that one more mistake like that and he's finished from that team. Trulli was for a similar reason (France '04). I don't think Briatore will take it any more.
