View Full Version : The future of graphics card - ATI or Nvidia
Given the last few months, it seems that ATI still have plenty of ammunition to shoot at Nvidia with. The release of the 9700 Pro has completely shocked the industry, they appear to be leading the way. Do Nvidia have anything to fight back with??? The FX, when it is finally released will be a great card, but will it be something we've seen all before just speeded up???
And it also seems likely that ATI's next GPU, the R350 wont be that far behind the FX, a matter of weeks. Over the coming years i really do see ATI taking the lead in the market.
Will Nvidia recover??

nVidia has more market share, more OEM presence, better drivers, more capital, more income, and more engineers.
Said another way, ATI can only stay ahead if nVidia screws up in a big way in the coming months. One mistake is not enough to topple nVidia, not currently.

nVidia have plenty of ammo to shoot back. I don't think they need to "recover" much, save for a bit of pride.
NV31 development is going very well. They should have a Spring line-up that consists of at least two NV31-based cards clocked at 350MHz/450MHz (5400/5400 Ultra?) and two NV30-based cards clocked at 400/500MHz (5800/5800 Ultra). From what I have heard, the chips are "flying".
R350 remains intriguing and is definitely the most exciting ASIC in development right now. Perhaps nVidia's current confidence is misplaced considering the fact that RV350 isn't too far off now, either. Then again, perhaps ATi's current confidence is misplaced considering the strength of NV31. Who knows what will happen...

Good points, I'd give Nvidia (2) generations to even the playing field.
Had they not run into *serious* delays w/ the NV30, I'm sure the NV30 and R9700 would be competing nicely. As it stands, b/c of the unfortunate situations involving moving to .13, ATI is a generation ahead of Nvidia, and likely to stay there until the release of the R400 and NV40.....About a year from now....
Good time to invest?

mostly because people can't look to the long term and refuse to acknowledge cycles.
