I installed XP and then SP1 plus all the other updates, and now it takes a good 30-40 seconds to get to the login screen once it gets to the first WinXP splash screen, is anyone else experiencing delays like that?

I've had nothing but problems since installing SP1...

Excel can't run,
Explorer crashing with too many picture thumbnails showing,
WMP9 can't play mpg vids w/o crashing...

just tons of stuff that is making me reformat over my Christmas break...WITHOUT SP1!!!

Odd...have had no problems whatsoever over here.

Except with my highpoint RAID controller enabled. Thankfully, I need that not.

No problems here either. As for the slow boot, I used tweakxp, my boottime used to be that bad, now are at about 7secs.

When I first installed WinXP, it took less than 20 seconds from power on to actually using windows. Now it takes almost 1min 30sec. I read all the information and tried the boot tools but could not speed the thing up. I wonder if it is at all effected by the fact that I converted from FAT32 to NTFS (actually in an effort to speed it up) instead of formating to NTFS a fresh?

I would say do a fresh install ;) also when you do, get tweakxp and use it once you have installed all drivers and programs.

I've heard the nvidia's display drivers dramatically increase the boot time sometimes. The built-in XP drivers boot quickly, but the newer, downloaded ones boot longer.

What about the Highpoint RAID controller? I have my harddrive (WD120JB) on it (non-RAID, v2.31 I think) :(

no probs with NV drivers yet, but the raid controller drivers gave me a delayed shutdown and stuff

I downloaded Tweak-XP Pro demo but only found 2 options relating to boot defraging and boot precaching. Nothing else obiously relating to speeding up my boot time. If you have any suggestions with using this program, you may want to share them with us thcdru2k.

Look through all the tweaks that you can find with tweakxp, I dont know which one it was that made my boot ups quicker, but it was tweapxp that made it happen. I think with the demo you get 30 starts, so you should be able to play around with it a bit before it expires.

OK, here's what I did, I reformatted, installed SP1
FIRST THING!
No issues, and it boots a lot faster than before when I installed it on top of all that garbage...
