The 6xAA option is available in games like Half-Life 2, but you suffer a huge performance hit, even on the GeForce 7800GTX. Maybe 2x 7800GTX's in SLI could take on the 6xAA challenge?

NVIDIA cards cannot do 6X AA period. Maybe HL2 does 8XS instead?

hmm, from what i've read setting 6xaa in hl2 when you have a nvidia card won't do anything.

NVIDIA cards have a 6xS option (available through RivaTuner) that I've used before. Granted it was one some older titles (original UT, Oni) but it always worked well.

So you can bootup in 8x, but forget playing in it?

Is it that noticable in UT? I gotta go scrounging in my basment, I know for a fact I have the orginal UT bouncing around down there somewhere.

16xS is fun in old games like Counter-Strike. I can still pull out 70fps (140Hz v-sync) with higher poly models.

Nothing like playing Half-Life in OpenGL mode at 1600x1200, 8xS AA and 16x AF. It was like a whole new game at those settings. :D

While you can't easily use 6xAA on nvidia cards, you can use 8xAA even on the 6800 series with some games. With a 6800U, I used it in some less taxing new'ish games like MVP Baseball 2005, NBA Live 2005, etc. and some of the older games. With the 7800s I can now use 8xAA in quite a few games although I'm not sure I really need it since I'm running at 1600x1200.

Theres a quite good range of games that are playable with dual 7800GTXs @8xAA .. heck even dual 6800GTs did play some.
some games smoothly playable @8xAA (1600x1200 or 1280x1024 res) on 7800GTX SLI :

HL2
BF2
LOTR:ROTK
XIII
Splinter Cell 3 (no HDR)
Morrowind
CMR04/05
Mafia
BIA
NFS:HP2

those are some of the ones i tested .. theres a lot others i believe.

I played Doom 3, ROE and Half-Life 2 with 8xAA / 16xAF at 1280x1024. :) THe 8xAA in HL2 was forced though cause obviously there is no setting for it ingame.

16xS would run fine on a 7800gtx in pretty much any game that's more than a few years old, and maybe a few newer ones like HL2. I remember I tried playing HL2 with 16xAA at 1024x768 on a 6800nu, got around 10-15 FPS. Since the 7800 is around 3x faster than that, I think that would be good enough to put it into the playable catagory. If you're going to output to a TV at it's native 640x480 res though, I think 16xS would work wonders.
