I have opened this thread coz i know absolutely 0 about how create apartion of an hard disk.

1) which is the best program for do that?

2) when i format the pc and i reinstall all the hard disk is already divided or i have to do it again?

3) i have heard that is possible do a partition where just put OS in the most ouside part of the disk so it load faster. Does it works? and if yes i do not have problem installing programs that has to be saved in other partition but also need to modify or create files in the OS partition?

4) I put the OS "ouside" the best way to improve performance? or is bvetter put outside the programs i use more often?

5) will some good soul ever do a sticky topic where explain how create "the perfect partition of an hd" ?

I want create partition of my dick because i have read a review where a partitionated big hd can run as fast as a raptor because the "head" of the hd has to do much less movemenent than no partionated hd.

1) It depends.

a) If you're starting with a brand new or formatted disk then the Windows installation CD makes it easy to partition the hard disk. If you're using Linux the same applies.

b) If you have a disk in which your OS is already installed, and you do not wish to reinstall Windows, you can partition the disk with tools such as Paragon Hard Disk Manager or Norton Partition Magic. These programs allow you to resize and partition your disks without having to reformat and reinstall Windows.

2) Yes the hard disk will still be divided. When re-installing your OS you only need to reformat the main OS partition. All other data will remain intact.

3) The first partition(s) you create should be your main OS partition(s). The next ones can be for your games and/or applications, etc.

4) On my system I find it best/easiest to create a partition for OS (~10GB), and then separate partitions for games/apps (sizes vary). It is important to note that, however, a lot of applications will be required to be re-installed anyway if you decided to format your OS partition in the future (mainly those applications that save files required in the system directories).

*edit - As far as speed goes, the number one thing you'll want to remember is keeping your disks/partitions defragmented. The best program for this, IMHO, is Raxco PerfectDisk (Microsoft Certified). Keeping your disk defragmented over time will increase speed more than partitioning it will.

why do u need 10 gb for the OS partition?

why do u need 10 gb for the OS partition?

To leave room for some applications. It is pointless to install every application on another partition because when formatting/reinstalling Windows, some will have to be reinstalled anyway.

Plus Windows XP requires 1.5GB for pagefile and 1.5GB for hibernation depending on the amount of RAM you have.

An initial winxp install takes 1.5 gigs, but after installing SP2 and other updates through MS and all the temperary internet files and cache files, it can take up a huge amount of disk space. My OS install directory has about 12 gigs of data in it. It's a 15 gig partition.

Also, you can back up your registry and application save files. That way, you won't need to install a lot of them back if you reinstall the OS.
