"With the Chancellor effectively acting as judge, jury and executioner, it was always going to be hard to secure a conviction under the golden rule in this cycle... However, the Chancellor's big problem is that he will start the next cycle in serious structural deficit with no obvious political window of opportunity for correction".
The guy is trying anything possible to avoid raising taxes, and that includes increasing borrowing (breaking his golden rule that borrowing should not outrun any surplusses over a 7 year cycle). Of course he could cut spending on some stupid government wastage, but noooooooooooooooooooooo! Testing people to see if they can have benefits costs more than just dolling it out, do they change that? NO! Fuel duty is phenomenally high in a time where oil prices are soaring, and there is another increase due. The tories provided good alternatives to where money is being spent and where it could be saved without cutting front line services.
People won't start caring about government until their wallets hurt a little more, and by then it will be too late. Socialst democracy doesn't work, it just makes the problems of socialism cloaked and take longer to surface. The NI increase in '03 is already biting.
