View Full Version : How open minded are you towards games that don't fit into your "genre"?

I ask because it seems like every game which defies genre, while critically acclaimed, always seems to flop commercially. Games like System Shock 2, Sacrifice, Battlezone, Darwinia... Seems like people are too easily intimidated by games they haven't played before but with different graphics.

I play any type of game, when played I say if I like it or not, Im not genre dependant

I was of the type of person that was always centered around the FPS genre, particularily on the PC. Now I play quite a variety of games of all genres. One genre in particular which I was an opponent of was RPGs. I thought I did not possess the patience and the attention span to play these games, but then I became engulfed into games such as KoTOR, Dungeon Siege, KoTOR II, and now WoW. I have turned over a new leaf you could say, and I am glad I did.

I'm more a graphics wh0re than a genre wh0re. I'll try anything if it looks nice. For instances, i'm not too big on rts's, but Age of Empires 3 looks  so i'll be trying it, I also never cared for the elder scrolls series, but seeing the beautiful forests and other scenery....i'll check that out too.

Yea, I know, I care about gameplay too, if it looks nice and plays like ass, I take it as a loss, I check a few visuals out and then dump the game, but come on, anyone who paid at least $400 for their video card can't tell me " graphics dont matter " if that was the case, you'd be using a mx440 at low detail @ 640x480, still playable..just not beautiful :p

I'm finally thinking about oc'ing my 6800 GT for these fall releases, I have a zalman cooler on it, hoping I can hit 430/1100.

I switch between FPS/shooters and RPG's.. although I haven't gotten into any MMORPG's cause I don't have/want to spend that much time.. (used to be addicted to MUDS and such)

RTS.. eh, I think I got burned out of them, playing the original dune2, C&C, and Warcraft.. The micromanaging is too stressfull..

I only avg about buying one game every month or so too.

Funny you mention System Shock 2. When I was visitng my parents, I found my copy of it.. and brought it home..

Edit: oh yea, occasionally I'll go back into the racing sims.. I used to play the F1Challenge 99-02 mods for a while.. Then I got GTR and played that for a while. never had the time to get really good at it though.. so i never joined an online league..

i personally dont like the way we seem to be shifting towards realism on the computer.. i wish some people would break the mould a bit and write a game which completely defies genre and has the graphical beauty and perfection to boot. as far as i can see, the genre lords seem to be making all the new games into 'pseudo-realism' . everything is looking like real life. hell, soon we will be having graphics cards making everything dirty for us with its new pollution-engine (tm)

i want abstract and i want it now. i want to escape this smelly, dirty environment i live in for a bit and experience something truly lush and interesting, not a bloody army sim. (scuse me language)

the more other-worldly the game, the better! show me your personality!
i really remember old-school games like stuff programmed in peoples bedrooms.. cause at least they were weird...

and NO not disney or anime !! make it a beaut to look at and have no humans in it! we are not the prettiest thing in the universe 1 bit!

so yah.. i guess i voted 5. sorry for the post but imn tired.

i want that game in the star trek episode where they had visors on and all they did was put spheres in hoops and then had a ment-gasm. then everyone got addicted and was walking around with these visors on and stuff. that rocked. nintendo should get on it and grow up a bit. lol.

and that game in the film 'the last starfighter' (i think) he was playing an arcade game - but in an alternate reality - the game was a real war! - and he got sucked in and pwned all the alien baddies. ;)

I dont have any restrictions on game geners .. i play RTS , FPS , 3D Action , Adv , Racing , Space-sim ..etc as long as the game suits my taste in term of gameplay.

I play anything that my Clan can play on thier machines as well. I don't care for the lonewolf style. While it might be appealing to others, the fun is just that much better when buds are as interested in it as you are. :)

So while I did enjoy Doom3 and FarCry, I never finished them because I rather game with my buds while on TeamSpeak. :D

I play anything that looks fun except for RTS, RPG, and online only games. RTS and RPG games just take too much time and effort. Online only games, while they look fun, I usually don't have the time to get good enough at the games for it to be worthwhile to play online. I'm sure I'd be annoying to the experienced players and generally just in the way or an easy kill. So, I just don't play them unless it's head-to-head against friends.

I'll probably buy something like Oblivion though just b/c of the graphics.

I generally don't branch out to genres I dislike, for instance I dislike sports games so wouldn't play one that is critically acclaimed. I tend to stick with FPS, RPG, RTS with some branching out to other action games. I will try to make an effort to play demos of big games but rarely do I leave my fav genres.

I'm pretty open minded towards anything except music. :D

07-25-05, 05:34 AM
I try to mix it up else things get too boring. That goes w/all things not just games.
