View Full Version : The Power of R300
Some people said ATi would fix TRUFORM once the DX9 drivers were out... they actually made it worse.
This is running with TRUFORM level 3, the default level for Counter Strike.
Check the fps counter in the upper left corner.

I'm currently running it at 1280x960-32 with 6x FSAA and 16x Quality Aniso.
Even though I turn off Aniso and FSAA and turn down the resolution to 640x480 I get almost just as bad framerates. In any case it's totally unplayable most of the times. Sometimes (I dunno why, it doesn't seem to be related to the amount of "TRUFORMed" objects on screen) it will reach a playable 50-60 fps. But 50-60 unsteady fps with drops as low as 9 fps is ANYTHING but playable.
ATi needs to remove "TRUFORM" from ALL of their specs regarding the R300 series!
On the positive side Ati has fixed a stupid problem with Vsync in HL engine games. :) (Not that it should be there to begin with.)

AnteP,
could it be a config issue? I tried it and found no loss in FPS. Even ran around in a few servers and did not see any loss:

Please note I forgot to move my FPS cap off the default 72 fps.
Nope I've confirmed it by testing it on multiple rigs, ATi has also recognized the bug by now.
Do you have a R300?
What CPU/Memory do you have?
Does the fps stay at 72 when there's weapons on the ground and other characters?
It seems as if there's two factors involved:
1. There's is currently a bug that effects TRUFORM performance, especially in Open GL.
2. TRUFORM on the R300 is software driven unlike on the R200 which has hardware support.
Sorry I just had to add something once I saw those bullets, hahaha they look so so funny :p

Got my 9700pro OEM, had it for about 2/3 months now.
AMD 2100XP CPU w/ 1 GB of DDR Ram
Counter barely ever moves of 72, lowest dip while playing was to 68 and yea I just ran around looking at the counter only which did not do wonders to my score and pissed of some players as I was not really helping my team.
I have win2k, running in OpenGL with Cat3.0
jbirney, has it always worked well for you or was it only fixed with cat 3.0 & DX9?

Truform works well for me in every game that I play that supports it. I've not had an FPS loss in them at all (Cat 2.5, and 3.0).
Same here, up to truform mode 3 works without a performance hit (this is playing with vsync) :)
Truform mode 7 with vsync goes down to 35fps.
There is a couple of tweaks I will try that should speed up truform a lot.
I will post my results soon for you guys.

Ady,
not 100% sure on CS. I did play around with TF on UT2k3 and did not see (but did not benchmark it either) and large drop in that game. However I have not played much of CS as of late so I can not say 100% when it started to work or if it was ever "broke" in the first place...

That M-16 is ass backwards. The chamber is on the wrong side of the weapon.

i don't know if i shoudl point this out or not, as all of you seem to be overlooking it. there is a vast difference in the degree of Truform being used in shot 1 and 2. things in shot 1 are much more rounded, while in shot 2 the gun is still very blocky compared to shot 1.
I knew it. :)
The lower the value of truform the less blocks in the image. :)
Seriously though, any truform value over 3 is overkill. Truform value of 1-2 is very good.
No need for values over 3 (IMO) as they tend to make the image look like a tea party with 9 year olds girls and boys playing with balloons. :)

Could be but he stated that he set it to truform level 3. Ripped right from my config.cfg file of CS:
ati_subdiv "3.0"
ati_npatch "1.0"
So I also "asked" for the same level. Actually you can tell TF is on and working very simply by looking at the bloated barrel. I did notice that we did not have the same res so that may help one to look different.

well, maybe it is just the angle, but the gun in his shot looks much more bloated. every part on his gun is bloated, but you can still see some rough jagged corners on the gun in your shot.
It's a custom model in my pic. It's even worse than the original ones when it comes to performance (not by much though).
I dunno if I would call that bloated, I think it looks pretty great, not like the original weapons that looks like balloon penises when using TF... ;)
