Well the 7800 was a fiarly big jump in performance, but I know what you mean. I think the G80 is going to be the equivilent jump from the FX -> 6xxx

I was also going to build a whole new system this fall was on the fence to go with either single threaded FX57 or or dual core X2 46/4800. However reading this new information about the G80 has really got me thinking if it wouldnt make more sense to wait till the G80 comes along to build a kick ass rig. I mean if I build a new system in a few months I have to go PCI-e and of course I will have to get a 7800gtx but then I will want a G80 next spring and will go for more cash. So it prolly makes sense to wait till q1 or q2 when the G80 is released to go this route. What do you guys think?
Oh and btw longhorn is offically now called VISTA. :)

Chances are the G80 won't be released until the middle of next year at earliest. That depends heavily, of course, on how powerful the R520 is - and I'm not talking about it being 'too powerful'. Instead, I'm suggesting that if the R520 is not as powerful as we're expecting, the G80 may come even later. One way you could go, is wait for the GF7 series equivalent of the 6600GT. If you get a high end mid range from this gen, it'll likely be reasonably comparable to what you have now, and won't be toooo expensive. That way you could just upgrade to the G80 when it comes out, and have a card to tide you over until then, if you still wanted to build your new rig soon.
Personally though, I think your rig is more than good enough to keep you going at a reasonable rate for another year, and if I were you I'd just build next year. The Dual core CPUs will probably be more reasonably priced across the range then as well. That said - I'm not a 'high end' buyer - my finances prohibit that, so I'm not really in the same situation as you at all.
Good luck with your decision.

^^
Thanks for the reply. Ya I'm really not sure what to do but I'm prolly gonna go with a full blown rig this fall and worry about upgrading to the G80 when the time comes. That is unless we get some concrete timeline in the next couple of months before I build.

if you go full blown rig go 939 that has a bios upgrade or comes with a bios that supports the x2's. This way if you don;t want to go x2 just yet you don't have to but instead can just go 939 64 for cheaper get a great perf boost compared to what you have now. then when the high end x2's come down in price next year end of this year and so forth you can switch over.

yeah because G80 = NV50 / NV5X
G70 = NV47+ or NV48+

Well now is a bit a prblem find where i have read it, but in gf3 or gf4 period i have read an article where that president said they were already working on nv50 and this would have integrated U3 engine. really i have not dream lol
now maybe nv50 is changed, cancelled or maybe he wanted mean optimized for U3 but what he said in interview was about integrate in hardware .. he said nothign about D3 anyway.
from what I remember, at the launch event for NV30 - GeForce FX, Nvidia's top brass (maybe Jen-Hsun himself) mentioned that the next two GPU generations were being worked on concurrently, the NV40 and NV50. this was in late 2002 at the actual unvieling of NV30.
