View Full Version : Upgrade question

I'm having a dilemma here, my current system consists of the following:
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
1GB Corsair XMS memory
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

the rest of the specs don't really matter. My dilemma is: should I replace the Radeon 9800 Pro? I'm worried that next years games, such as Age of Empires III, FEAR, Unreal Tournament 2007, Alan Wake, Elder Scrolls IV, etc. won't run very well. I just want a card that can run in 1024x768 with settings at High Quality and give 40fps or above. I tried the FEAR beta and it barely ran. I can get a Geforce 6800 128MB for about 200 dollars or a 256MB 6800 for about 275 via newegg. Is this worth it? Should I wait till a midrange 7800 comes out? I cannot afford a completely new system nor a 500 dollar plus video card as I'm a poor college student. 300 dollars is the most I can see my self being able to spend on a new video card. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would wait until you need more power.

I would say wait. By the time UT2007 comes out, you'll probably be able to buy a G80-derivative for $300 that will smoke a 7800GTX.

Yeah I think you should wait. I cant recommend anything slower than a 6800 GT as an upgrade from a 9800 Pro. Id say wait until you play a game you like that doesnt run fast enough, then see what cards are in your price range. Its usually a lot better to do that than to try to predict which cards will make next gen games run smoothly.

please wait till any of those games release. get a mid-range 78 series, or mid-range r5xx series then(whichever is better). maybe you will have to change your mobo +CPU too. (ive read they are goin to be pci-e only. but you never knw.)

If you cant wait, leadtek geforce 6800 128mb is available for 175.00USD on newegg, bfg 6600gt for 160bux. both perform almost same. take the one that suits n serves your needs the best.

i'd still say wait for those to relase.

I would wait too untill you need the extra power but one thing you did'nt mention was a power supply because it will manner when you start upgradeing unless you already have a good one.
