View Full Version : Just buy a 6600GT, plug and play?

Alright. Given my specs, running on the 76.xx drivers released with the BF2 demo...

Can I just simply buy a 6600gt (MSI -SP Riddick ver.) , swap it out with my 5900XT, and be done with it?

Has anyone here done this, on the nforce2 systems?

TBH a 6600GT would not be too much of an upgrade from your 5900XT. I suggest you perhaps buy one of the lower-end 6800s if you're tight on the cash.
As for the swapping, windows will probably detect the new card and uninstall the old ones and install the new ones, but I suggest you uninstall your 5900XT drivers first anyways and clean it with driver cleaner. Peace,

For your current RIG. the 6600GT would be very good. the 6600GT nearly performs as good as a 6800 non-ultra at resolutions lower than 1600x1200. so IMO, get the 6600GT or 6800 non-ultra
both are cheap and cost the same (almost).
leadteks 6800 128mb on newegg is for 175.00 and a 6600gt at newegg was for 150-160 bux.

100% or better in every case. Besides, for $150 better than I could have gotten last generation for $400, and I'm not upgrading my CPU nor mobo for a while.

So you suggesting to remove the 5900XT, driver cleaner, boot back to onboard graphics, install new drivers and video card.

As far as installing the new vid card. Download and run DriverCleaner first. When you've finished with the cleaning process, shut down your system while it's in safe mode, don't boot back to Windows. Pull the 5900, pop in the 6600, power on then install the drivers again. No need to revert to onboard graphics at all.

1. So, reboot into safe mode (F8 during post?)
2. run Driver Cleaner, which I already have.
3. shut down
4. pull old card, install new card.
5. "found new hardware", but cancel "find drivers" then install my own (download the latest from nvidia).

6. Enjoy?

Thanks for the tips.

BTW, what do you have for a windows PC, beside the WIP PC?

Before booting into safe mode, go to the add/remove programs in control panel and remove the NVIDIA display drivers. Then start at step 1 in your list and follow them exactly as you listed.

And the only other PC I have besides the WIP one is my Mac (switched from an nForce4 SLI setup as I got bored with modern PC gaming).

 Sorry to hear that. Perhaps a new game will come out and once again spark your interest.

hmm that's odd - i always thought the fx5900xt was comparable to the 9800 pro which is a competitor of the 6600gt. tbh tho u should not just look at doom3, as, the 6x00 seies are quite gl optimised.. peace,

There a good write up at THG (http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20050705/index.html) for AGP users. From all that I have read, here and elsewhere, In most cases nothing comes close to the 6600GT from the FX gen.

I appreciate your honesty, but why not look at the games I have? In fact, in the write up I only have one game used in the benchmark. Although I'll be getting the MSI -SP ver. which comes with Chronicles of Riddick.

The 5900XT was originally designed & priced to compete in the 9600XT's market segment, and it does quite well when you look at the performance.
