I'd suggest four DIMMs of PC3200 512M at circa $40 each.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Manufactory=&PropertyCodeValue=521%3A7965&PropertyCodeValue=523%3A7857&PropertyCodeValue=524%3A7862&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&description=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=147&Submit=Property

Look for lifetime warranty. You never know when you might need it. I've had big-name RAM fail after months of use, RAM that passed overnight MemTest86 runs on initial purchase.

If you ask for brand advice you'll get a different recommendation from every person who replies. I tend to limit my purchases to Mushkin and Corsair for high end systems, and Crucial for low-end systems.

That being said, I tested some no-name DIMMs recently and Wintec 3-8-8 PC3200 actually performed at 2-5-5 @ 200MHz.

Are you looking for 1GB or 2GB and How many DIMMs?

4x512M would be cheaper than 2x1G.

Yea but if he runs 4gbs he has to go down to 2T timings :( I would suggest 2x1gb's if you can

try to save your money. try to save $250 and you can get a good pair of 2 x 1GB sticks which run A LOT better than 4x512MB.

Uh, did you lose his constraints? I don't know anywhere you can get 41G DDR for $170 USD. 21G PC3200 is pretty much doable, but not even 4G PC2100 is <$170.
