Dilema:

I have 1 x 7800GTX and a 3800+ and have cash to buy either another Asus 7800GTX or something along the lines of an FX-55.

Should I get the second 7800GTX for SLI or would my money be better soent on a faster CPU?

My PC (See specs below) is only 100% gaming.

You wont gain much by doing either so the best thing to do would be to send the spare cash to meeee :D

ps, i think i'd go for a Dual-Core CPU

A more powerful graphic card will have some more immediate benefits in nearby time. You can run games @ 1600x1200 at 8xAA or with SLI AA in the mean time while games catch up. I'm using a 3800 + setup. If you game and do nothing else on that system a second card would do you some good. If you dont then maybe a processor. I do all my multitasking on my second PC so I have no real need of a multicore processor right now.

You could save your money until next year when a new-gen card will be out.

Anandtechs 7800GTx/7800GTX SLI Review (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2451&p=7) should give you some idea how the FX-55 will perform with a single/dual card setup

TechReport (http://www.techreport.com/etc/2005q3/hires-gaming/index.x?pg=1) have a review with the 7800's in single and dual configuration as well(A64 4000+)

Why not overclock your Cpu?

If you already have a 3800+ don't buy an FX, you won't notice a difference. Wait until the Socket M2 platform is around and go dual core then.

Anthony thought you already got the 2nd 7800GTX ? wait till mid next month for AMD cpu price drop and then decide between 2nd card or FX-55 :)

or if you can't wait, join me get both hehe

Upgrading from a 3800 to FX55 would be a waste of money. You'd be better off overclocking like hell... or better still get an AMD A64 X2 :D because dual core is uber sexy.

If dual core doesn't interest you though... yes I would sooner upgrade to GF7 SLI than I would a 3800 to FX55.

7800 gtx sli with 3800 will blow the water out of a 7800gtx (non sli) with an fx55.

Get the second 7800 GTX ;)What he said. Do that for a much better immediate result. A64 3500 man (jAkUp) post your FEAR benchmarks!!

Nearly doubles his performance, though he's "so heavily crippled" in the cpu department. This isn't rocket science.

Id save up and buy a x2 4800+ before worrying about a second video card. What can't ONE 7800GTX handle right now for you?

geforce i disagree he specifically stated this.
My PC (See specs below) is only 100% gaming.
a 2.4 ghz 1mb cache dual core cpu will be slower than his single core 2.6 1gb ghz fx-55 in 98 percent of games out today. the x2 is not a bad choice for an upgrade but he specifically states 100 percent of his used is gaming.(my assumption is that he does not multitask or encode while gaming)

edit/update: nevermind he has a 3800 which will be slower than a x2 4800 but still he will gain much more in gamign by going sli than goign dual core.

fair enough...how about an FX-57 then? =)

I just dont see the point in sli right now, cpu's are such a bottleneck, i'd personally go for as much processing power as I could get before worrying about a 2nd card. (Your 1st card is being bottlenecked...why get two?)

geforce actually i messed up above. read my edit/update. still even with a 3800 he will gain so much more in gaming with a second 7800gtx than with any cpu upgrade.(yes even an fx57 or x2 4800) and his rig is only used for gaming. my main point is to get the best upgrade for his use. a second 7800 gtx is it.

oh and his 7800gtx isn't really being cpu limited all that much at high resolutions in games. (though in sli i think it will be)

Well he "is" running @ 2.7 Ghz. But still. I have a 3800+ @ 2.4 Ghz and SLI still returns some pretty beefy returns.

oh and his 7800gtx isn't really being cpu limited all that much at high resolutions in games. It is so difficult to get this point across. Takes a lot of ass-busting. Sure, older games and even new games at low settings are cpu bottlenecked. All you have to do is dial up the IQ and bam, the cards are the bottleneck again.

Are you interested in 8xSAA at hi-resolutions with every detail cranked? Also, would you like to, at the same time, have potent enough silicon use v-sync at all times? Fluidity with no tearing, ever?

In most games this is a playable reality, but you've got to have the cards. Just ask ChrisRay or jAkUp how useless their SLi setup is. :drooling:

Im getting the second card today from Computer Alliance.

I will probably wait for about 3 or 4 weeks then get the FX-57.

Second GTX. your CPU is fine already.

Get the second 7800gtx. If you already have a CPU as good as the 3800 you are fine. I'd look at another AMD perhaps when the 3.0ghz Orleans core hits. Or perhaps the X2s in '06 as another suggested that will be going DDR 2 and will be faster as well. Since I play a lot of MMOs I am thinking dual core myself because of all the other applications like firewall, and anti virus I run when the game is up.

If you do get another GTX play 1600x and greater. Heck a set up like that is meant for 2048x. At least IMO. If you aren't playing extreme res I'd just sit on that cash honestly. As another said, a single 7800GTX can handle pretty much anything you throw at it up to 1600x. Unless you are trying to stack 8xSAA with 16xAF.

Check out the numbers here for battlefield 2 with 4xAA|16xAF at 1280x and 1600x to see what I mean:
