Update on Key Provisions of the Disengagement Plan

Israel plans to begin withdrawal from the Gaza Strip (21 settlements) and
from four settlements in northern Samaria beginning between August 15 and
17. The withdrawal will include civilian and military presence and is
expected to take about a month.

The Knesset has passed legislation regarding relocation and compensation for
settlers. Although plans are not final, it seems that replacement housing
will be built on the seacoast north of Gaza in the area of Ashkelon.
Relocated residents are also encouraged to relocate in areas of the Negev.

The Israeli government's position, endorsed by the Bush and Clinton
administrations, is that Israel will maintain control of areas of the West
Bank that include cities, town and villages, security areas and
installation. An estimated 80% of the settlements in the West Bank are, in
effect, suburbs of major Israeli cities such as Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and
are essential to ensure security.

Israel will assist, together with the international community, in improving
the transportation infrastructure in the West Bank in order to facilitate
Palestinian mobility and economic activity in the West Bank and will work to
reduce the number of checkpoints throughout the area. Israel agrees to
coordinate assistance and training for the Palestinian security forces by
American, British, Egyptian, Jordanian, or other experts in an effort to
combat terrorism and maintain public order.

Israel plans to transfer industrial, commercial, and agricultural facilities
to an international party that will put them to use for the benefit of the
Palestinian population. The infrastructure for water, electricity, sewage,
and telecommunications will remain in place. At the request of the PA
leadership, Israel will demolish the homes evacuated by settlers so that
more appropriate multi- family housing can be built for Gaza residents.

It is my personal hope for a good showing by the settlers as they depart, as some are somewhat extreme in their views and beliefs wrt their rights to remain.

I wonder how many will go willingly ? I think they will lose their compensation if they do not go willingly.

bkn makes a good point about some of the settlers. There is a tiny minority of very vocal very angry settlers who could mess this whole thing up. Israel's agreements to this roadmap are senisble and cautious, the last thing it needs is its own people not helping that situation.

The Muslims will not stop until Israel is wiped off the face of the map. If they think this will result in long term peace, they are dead wong.

Only one person could have said that better, and he has.

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia Wednesday said Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip would eventually lead to its surrender of the Jews' ancient capital – Jerusalem.

“We are telling the entire world, today Gaza and tomorrow Jerusalem. Today Gaza and tomorrow and independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,” Qureia said while reviewing PA security forces in Gaza.

He insisted the Palestinian Arabs would never agree to end their hostility towards the Jews until the holy city was relinquished to their control.

“Without Jerusalem there will be no peace,” said Qureia a day earlier, amid reports Israel planned to build a new Jewish housing structure in the so-called “Muslim Quarter” of Jerusalem's Old City.

I seen this on Foxnews last night. This sounds bad. This guys is saying that what they are getting now isn't enough. They want it all. Why does or will Israel honor the pull out then?

And yesterdays rocket attack that ended up killing Palestinians, they are insane. The PA leaders need to put a stop to this stuff now, before it is too late.

I seriously think if there is a genuine peace in Israel/Palestine, then the people who spout the crap about jerusalem will be marginalised in the way the IRA were in Northern Ireland. Give it 25 years after that point, and who knows, maybe there could be peace. How long can extremists sustain their rheotoric after history has rendered them obsolete relics of a former conflict.

Genuine peace will come to Israel and palestinians when there is a winner and a loser in a war.

This world is guided by the aggresive use of force.

I disagree, this can be solved with dialogue. It won't be as quick as sending in the entire western armies to occupy the entire middle east and run it like the romans did but it would certainly be less costly. Dialogue achived almost silly things at first with the IRA, like "warnings" of a terrorist attack, but over the course of many years bit by bit a peace has been clawed back. Both sides have to make concessions, the roadmap is merley stage 1. If that succeeds it could still be a very long time until peace came, but its not impossible at all.
