check out this thread someone told me about - it's not the best looking but 15 deg drops in temp at load is pretty impressive.

Looks like it works pretty well, too bad it looks like ass lol. I might try it later, rather than spending ~$100 on the eVGA brick solution.

What i did was leave stock BFG 7800GTX heatsinks as is and just tied 4x 80mm ADDA case fans together and sat them over the cards so that air flow cools both front and back of both cards

before stock heatsink
GPU idle: 49-53C
GPU load: 74-83C

after stock heatsink + 4x ADDA case fans

GPU idle: 41-43C
GPU load: 66-69C

Haven't tested for better oc's yet as been priming my FX-57 cpu at 3031mhz :)

edit:

not bad

Why not just use watercooling instead of dealing with that sort of ugly mess and noise? My system is silent and cools a hell of a lot better than rigging some ugly loud fans to a card just to get a few degrees cooler.

no intention of voiding card warranties right now plus too much of pain with water cooling for 7800GTX SLI when at times i need to use 1x 7800GTX on each of my 2x DFI NF4 rigs

Doing this with a 92mm panaflo fan gave me 35C idle temps.

Which is great but... it gives me the cold bug from being to cold, which isn't great.

so untill Nvidia really fixes the problem, Im taking the fan off.

Oh~ It is a super stupid air cooling! I think this system will be very noisy and very low cooling efficiency. Is it really zalman VGA cooler?

77.76 drivers fixes the cold bug

Ok, i went ahead and mounted a 80mm papst on my 7800gtx like in the link. Should it suck air away from the card og blow ain on the card?

hmm dont seem to work here....In my CoolerMaster Stacker with a papst 80mm either blowing or sucking :p. Still 52c idle....

seems it doesnt hurt to remove the lid covering the heatsink.I got a vantec fancard already blowing air onto my 7800GTX,removing the lid may get me 1-2 degree drop in temps.

hmm well i dont get it. They get really big temp drops and i cant get more then 2c :) From 55 idle to about 52c :(

Is this mod effective for 6800GT too?

Found my problem. My papst cooler have to big a "center" so it actually cover most of the core :( Just got a new 80mm fan that runs at 4500rpms insted of the papst 1500rpms. And i will try to moun the fan 5cm from the core to get the air better flor at the core.

For me it can't be done with this BFG 6800GT OC dual LED fan.
The fans and the heatsink are pretty much one piece and the fans are in the way. Also, the metal cover is screwed down on the back of the heatsink with tiny screws that aren't coming loose easily. I don't want to strip them.

It depends though. Maybe if you have a reference cooler.

I'm getting my Zalman V700-CU soon with some AS5 so hopefully that'll give it a 10c drop atleast. It's too hot in this room to game right now.

yes the dead center won't cool anything... reason why i set up and positioned my fans like i did here http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=669460&postcount=3 :)

Got it down to 47c idle now with a used AMD64 cooler :)

That is why the AMD fan is perfect, or the low profile 80mm Zalman.

do the amd64 heatsink screws work on the 7800gtx heatsink fins ?

Added my "Uber" cooling mod back onto my 7800gtx. and installed the 77.76 drivers so I no longer get the cold bug.

Idle gpu = 33C
load gpu = 44C
(thats with a 490/1300 OC)

But I decided to push my card hard.

500/1400mhz

= 8686 3dmarks.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1108317

I still think I could push both much higher, as my load temps only went up to about 46C under those speeds, and I had no artifacting.

But I don't really feel like risking my brand new $700 dollar card by pushing it to much, mabye in a few years

In the mean time, Im going to be making my everyday clock speeds 490/1300 vs 450/1255
gets me about 8432 3dmarks at those speeds.

I use siptights to strap it on. Dont really want to screw over my 7800gtx :p

Btw just monitored my card when running a 3dmark03 with Rivatuner. If i clock the card at 480 mhz on the core it shows 520mhz in the rivatuner monitor.... insane.
