If this is correct then graphics card makers should be getting the final R520 GPUs sometime in august.
I expect to see a hard launch of the R520 in early september, but in limited quantities.
I still think that the R520 will be a killer once its released. it will be interesting to see how its going to perform in FEAR .. (the probably most demanding FPS game ever!)

It has so much to beat now - it does indeed need to be a killer, if its anything other than the fastest GPU on the planet at launch then I see ATI playing catch up for some time.
im not in the market for a new GPU until late 2006 - still makes intersting reading though..........

Yep no new gpu for me either, till mid/late 06. But i do hope that the 520 will be faster then the gtx, only for the simple fact that it will move nvidia forward faster, and reduce price point models. Unless of course there is a illumanti like organization among gpu manufacturers, lol. bahaha
Hmmm...I'm getting close to being in the market for a new upgrade AND If I get a school loan this fall, and I am planning to, I'll have some extra cashizzle....

What what what?!?! I don't think you will be able to pull your 6800GT that LONG, unless you want to give up some serious eyecandy. Mine is already brought to its knees buy games such as FEAR and BF2 w/ good+ IQ.

Well, 2x6800GTs can go a long way. ;-) :-D :-D :-D
Then again, so could a single 7800GTX which I believe can be bought for less than what it'd cost to get 2x6800GTs. Hmm... where would YOU put your money? ;-)
G80..perhaps...new GPU with vista..not before.

im not worried about the eye candy - im after a SERIOUS CPU upgrade and nobody makes a CPU fast enough yet - might have to wait until 2007.
dont get me wrong the AMD X2's and FX chips are nice and all but I want something faster and faster we will most definately have (from both vendors) by late 2006.
sod the graphics card ;)

Is the R520 going to be ATI's flagship GPU or the R580? I'd think that the R580 would be the flagship GPU and as such it seems odd to expect the 7800Ultra to compete against the R520 IF the R580 IS ATI's flagship chip. Wouldn't nVidia then have to release a refresh, like a 7999Ultra Extreme Edition to compete with the R580? Seems redundant to me. The only logical reason for releasing the 7800Ultra as a direct competitor to the R520 is for market share: nVidia having their product line out before ATI's thus generating more income. But it would definitely leave them behind on the performance end, wouldn't it?
Just some speculation on my part. ;) :D

Superfly, theoreticly, you should get more out of your games by adding a beefier CPU than a beefier graphics card, right? I mean, isn't the cpu the main bottleneck for the GPU? If so, a CPU upgrade would be more beneficial/cost effective than a GPU upgrade I'd think.

^^ well yeh - thats what im saying dude
Both AMD and Intel will have some fantastic new chips on the table by late 2006 - just in time for Windows Vista.
what made you think I was after a faster GPU when my entire post stated CPU???
seeing as prey and unreal 2007 arent coming out until late Q2 06, I see no reason to upgrade until then. My 6800 GT runs great in Fear and i'm sure Quake 4 will run smooth as well, thanks to nvidia's superior opgl. I dont see much inbetween these releases, so i'm trying to hold off on an upgrade until windows vista/G80...hopefully by then a decent cpu will be out so these gpu's wont be so limited.
Buuuuut if ATI puts out a killer card at $299 like they did with the x800XL...well...then I might have to upgrade. :D

Here's hoping to. :) Don't want to break down and get the 7800 gt until I've seen what ATI has to offer. Sitting on a 9500 pro for a long time now. But it has done me well up to this point. Thinking of upgrading the whole computer. Looking at an A64 3800 X2 (OCed) and maybe I nice new Dell 24" Ultrasharp widescreen LCD to go along with it! He he. Widescreen gaming is where it's at, at least from what I hear. Plus for work of course.

Yeah, I just ordered a 6800GT last night, more of a tide-me-over untill ATI releases their product and CrossFire.

I was more or less just clarifying that theory, I did not mean to make it sound as though you were referring to a new GPU. I relised that was not what you were after, I just wasn't certain as to whether or not the CPU was the GPU's main bottleneck.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. ;) :D :D
My 5950U had been a good card, but currently I can't play the F.E.A.R. SP Demo at all with it. I do good to get 1FPS regardless of what my IQ is set at. So, in comes the 6800GT to save the day! ;) :D :D

Anything to back that up? Are you implying that there is going to be a more dramatic jump in performance than what single-core scaling has been giving us of late? Or do you foresee some interesting new multicore architectures and apps that can effectively utilize them?

I wouldn't count on Intel for anything right now...

lol - im not but to assume that they wont produce another kick ass architecture is just plain dumb.

nice find - I was actually looking for the info I read on AMD's on die DDR2 plans, that article you posted sums up exactly what i had read on Intels road map.

The ATi guy at quakecon just said that R520 is going to be out in September.

Still too late i'm afraid.
NVIDIA is in total control.
ATI can launch a kickass series, but the green dudes will respond the next day.
Sorry.

Oh I don't give a crap about ATi, the sooner they release their card, the sooner we might see nvidia's answer. That's what I want.
