It should definitely be actual clockspeed. I would say 3400+ for the lowest-clocked model should be right, at least if it scales like that 800mhz sample did.

The Hammer chips will emulate 32-bit, but it should be lossless because they keep the x86 architecture. Intel's 64-bit mainstream processor won't use that tech though.

so many uncertainties.

One thing is certain though.

If hammer sucks, AMD is finished.

Simple as that.

None of its uncertain to me...I've read everything about the subject.
AMD will have an ass kicking processor. As to what Intel will have, I couldn't say.

Windows XP 64-Bit Edition will run on the Intel Itanium and AMD Hammer CPU as the platform for workstation users who are reaching the memory limits of 32-bit systems.

Windows XP 64-Bit Edition will initially support up to 16 gigabytes of RAM and up to eight terabytes of virtual memory. Physical memory support will grow in the future as hardware capabilities expand. Data in memory is accessed thousands of times faster than it is on a disk drive, so it boost your performance tremendously. Also, Windows XP 64-Bit Edition has been designed to take advantage of the superior floating point capabilities of the Itanium processor. But what about Hammer?
Dunno yet, but I'm sure Microsoft and AMD are working on it.

if MS can't do this right, I'll have to just say f*** em

BAH! I don't care about hammer, probably just as unstable as any other AMD processor, I'm buying a 3.06 Ghz P4 anyways:D

My first Athlon (Classic) was unstable for a month or so when they released a new BIOS
My second Athlon (XP) gets too hot, which I can safely blame on it being close to my video card which I have concluded that the fan is practically dead on.

So you can safely say I've had no instability problems with AMD K7 processors that weren't brought on by something else.

So...
Bite me.

When an 800mhz model is beating a 1.6ghz P4 Northie, that means something.

LOL viper, don't lie.;) :p :)  :o  :D

I thought it was beating a 1.6ghz p4. not 2.4 ghz?

I'd never buy intel. they're crap. Ever since amd started copying their chips their versions have always been better.

I'm not interested in raw gh'z numbers. Clock for clock, all amd chips beat the equivelent class intel chip.

Maybe it was 1.6...actually yeah I think it was. But that's 2x faster clock-for-clock than Intel processors.

haha! there you go again, show me anything that will prove that a 800 Mhz CPU, any brand, will beat any 1.6 ghz CPU of any brand and I'll beleive you. But it has to be real.

Also, I don't care what any company says about their product, I only care about real performance that I get, and I get the best performance from Intel processors time after time. They have never let me down and I will continue to equipt my computers with their chips.

Yep. It will be high time to embrace 64bit l00nix. hehe

An 800 mhz Alpha would DONKEYRAPE a 4 ghz Pentium 4, and that's a FACT.

EDIT: Lemme dig up an article I read a while back as proof.

LOL, ok ok, you got me, I put my foot in my mouth, What is an ALpha? lets narrow it down to what netviper said, an 800 Mhz AMD chip, that is out right now, VS a 1.6 ghz P4 that is out right now. Retail. I don't think it could do that.

I never said a chip that is out now. I was referring to the Hammer sample. If you had bothered to read my posts on the previous page, you would realize that. :p

*edit*

Jeeze, I always manage to come across as sounding incredibly hostile! Sorry, no malice intended.

LOL, wow, you got me, I gotta take my foot outta my mouth and think before I post next time. Sorry, I got caught up in the moment, didn't see hammer or sample, just saw AMD 800 Mhz will beat Intel 2.4 ghz. LOL, woops, you know... you see what you wanna see. You should know the feeling.:p

DAMN!

Hammer benchies!

I'm sure many have seen these but it's the first time I have!

Impressive!

Well, since you've never had an Athlon by the sounds of it....Yeah.
It's not a matter of Intel letting anyone down, but the prices on their high end stuff is ridiculous.

Yes I do own a few athlons. And, I don't think $193 for a 2.4 ghz Intel Pentium 4 processor is bad at all.

I wanna see Hammer vs. Northwood core, not willamette. They out yet?

[Corporal Dan]
07-30-02, 09:39 PM
Dunno about that. But the results can be extrapolated.

AthlonXP at it's normal speed vs northwood

Plenty of those out

Just perforn a few calculations and there will be a reasonnabl perf. estimate

Or you can run the same tests yourself.

The prog they used later in the article is available for download
