(I was not sure where to put this thread please move it if there is a better catagroy for it)

Recently my computer has been shutting down by it self.
It shuts down like it would if you go to start->shutdown,
not like if you pulled the power cord.
Also when it starts to shutdown it acts like a program is starting and in the taskmanger i see two entries that werent there before
CMDNINST and MMTASK
Im not sure if it is a software problem as it keeps doing this after a format and reinstall of windows.

1.60ghz intel pentium 4
256 mb of ram
40 gb ibm deskstar 120 gxp
Nvida geforce 4 mx 4000 128mb of ddr (77.72 forceware)
Windows ME
Sound Blaster live value

Try a virus and spyware scan.

Edit: nm, saw that you kept doing it after a format. Out of curiosity is your XP copy or whatever you are using modified in someway?

Try installing your firewall and anti-virus software after a fresh format and reinstall of windows _before_ you go online with it. The same thing will happen with XP SP1 if you have no firewall, even before you get a chance to install SP2 from windows update. I had to make myself a slipstreamed SP2 CD to make the whole thing easier.

You might be able to fix it with your anti-virus or anti-spy/adware software if you have any installed.

I second and third that shudder and would also like to know if an upgrade to XP has been considered.

When MS apologized for releasing ME...you KNOW it's bad...

Have you added anything new to or around the computer? I had a very simliar problem with my old PC. Turns out it was an antenna I had brought in for the tv. Everytime I would stand up away from the computer, it would shut down, ended up figuring out the antenna "bunny ears" would wiggle when I stood up and some odd static or wave was making the pc shut down, I stopped being lazy and plugged the cable wire into the tv, got rid of the antenna, and never had the problem again.
