Yeah, my wife would kill me, then divorce the corpse...lol

Anyway, I went ahead and bought the 2 GTX's.... WAF is very low at the moment, but when I show her Doom 3 on ultra high quality with 8 X AA getting 102 FPS, she'll come around :o

I wanted to ask you guys, is it normal for one card to run 4 to 5 degrees celcius hotter than the other?

GPU 1 reports idle at 59-60 while GPU 2 reports 52-54... I assume GPU 1 is the top card that my moitor is plugged into, so it is working all the time... is this correct?

Thanks for all your opinions guys, I really appreciate it!

Yeah thats normal, the one that is running higher should be the master card though the one that connects to the monitor.

Yeah so GPU 1 is the card connected to my monitor, which is closest to the CPU?

The other thing is that the memory on the back of the card is HOT, and I do mean HOT! I have an 80mm fan blowing on it, but the memory is too hot to touch... this can't be good for it

LOL... that's true, but with my luck, it would take out my entire system along with it!

A particular Johnny Cash song keeps playing in my mind....

Well, after all the speculation and guess work, my fears have been realized...

The 7800 GTX 512 is a reality. Ref design has the core at 550Mhz and the mem at 1500Mhz DDR.

Needless to say, I am absolutely furious. Had I known the Ultra was coming I wouldn't have wasted $1,050 on the 2 GTX 256's I own now.

After waiting months for various driver issues to be resolved, so that I could play my fav games in all their graphical glory, nVidia has to kick me in the teeth one last time. I have had it with them.

My nVidia mobo has issues, my graphics cards have issues, and they go and pull this crap...

I think I will sell the 2 GTX 256's, and the NF4 mobo and go with the guys in red for a while... they seem to play a bit more fairly.

550MHZ Core and 1700MHZ Memory, so goes the risk of buying the flagship of the fleet, there is a possibility of a new card that will have greater performance. Two 7800 GTX 512 is looking at 1400US so it isn't all rosy, to sya the least.

Yeah, 6 month refreshes were fairly normal until Nvidia skipped one cycle. It's just the way it is.

NVIDIA owes you nothing. You make it seem like you have a single GF4 MX instead of the two of the second most powerful cards on the market. And, the fact that you paid half again as much for the both of those cards what it costs for a single 512MB card and are getting more performance than a single 512MB GTX is still pretty good. Stop bitching and be happy with what you've got. Unless you're gaming at 1920x1200, you aren't going to notice any difference between the two cards anyway.

What the hell issues are you talking about? I have two 6800GTs and an NFORCE4 SLI board and have no issues at all, except for the ones that came from Gigabyte's odd choice of using a passive cooler on the chipset.

Have fun. And by "fairly" you mean "not at all" right? Because, uh, I still don't see any crossfire boards on the shelves, let alone any X1800XTs to use on that crossfire board.

But hey, enjoy that paper computer. I bet ATI's paper cards really fly through stacks of lesser looseleaf.

Did everyone's GTX 256's just explode inside their computer today when the 512 launched?

If not, how is it "wasted money"? Did you just buy them for bragging rights?

I'd wait till january-february before going with "the guys in red". Word is that they're going to stop the R520 production at the end of the month.

The first R580 die already taped out in mid summer and they're stockpiling them for a grand launch after the Xmas season.

hmm so there goes the sad story of X1800,nothing more than a stop gap.considering how low their availability is they shouldnt even have released the X1000 series but hey they had to feed the press and shareholders with something at least, they were having their asses sued already.

believe me you wont see Xfire mainboards in action and wide availability in its current status.it seems that there are some Xfire mobos out but they are very few in numbers.ATi already retracted a whole bunch of boxed and ready for sale DFI Xfire mainboards (It happened silently and went quite unnoticed)seems like they find more bugs in mobos by the day and they are not satisfied with them yet.but the actual story is that IMO Xfire(one) is almost like a dead fetus in the womb,Xfire2 is what ati is working on right now to replace the aborted Xfire(one).

btw nVIDIA surely knows how to play Poker with ATi.the recent launch clearly shows that.I should've trusted my Poker instincs too this time around but I didnt,Next time I surely will.Only a 1GiG card can win my money now.

Well, my point is that "on the other side" things are similar :)

People should be satisfied with what they got. Unless they went into an hardware purchase just to "show off". And so they're ethernally condemned to chase the latest and the greatest.

Who said pride comes with a price ? :D

(whine)

That's hilarious. Did your 7800 GTX's stop working? Does having "the best" matter THAT much to you? Check the benchmarks, which show that the upgrade would be quite marginal for someone with a 7800GTX already. You have no reason to upgrade from what you have. nVidia is continuing to update their drivers to fix game issues and as of the current release (81.94) I have absolutely no problems in any games I play, which includes FEAR, Quake 4, HL2, WoW, and a great deal of older games. "Play a bit more fairly" LOL like nVidia has to stop its product cycle just to appease your ego.

Nope, but it doesn't need to be. The 512mb 7800GTX beats the X1800XT in raw performance, and the 256mb 7800GTX beats the X1800XT price/performance wise. Going a step down the GT provides similar or better performance than the XL at a lower cost. It gets even better in the midrange. The $209 6800GS destroys the (currently unavailable) $250+ X1600XT.

ATI is beat, end of story.

Well the 90nm part is supposed to have a totally reworked AA engine which will allow multisampling with floating point buffers. If they re-introduce the high quality AF of NV3x cards, it will also be a welcome addition.

I believe Murphy's Law will be applicable here. If you stay away from buying the GTX's, an Ultra will never be released. The moment you buy a pair, you'll see an Ultra announced within a couple of days. Never fails.
looks like he bought the GTX's hahaha

Well, it would happen someday. You just cant crib on the product refreshes. 1050 dolars wasted? Are you sure. Have your GTX's got completely outdated, obsolete? If you think theyve become completely worthless you can always send 'em to me, ill pay for the shipping ;).
I Think you should go with the red's, order the latest top of the line card and hopefully it will be delivered someday. Weeks after that they will introduce the r580, then.
Again back to square 1?
So green Goblins are bad, Red did it too? whats remaining?

OMG i hate teh green goblins coz they replaced the 68GT with 68GS. Damn them ;)

FFS, what is so wrong with wanting the top of the line?

Nvidia OWES me a mobo that doesn't corrupt my downloads.

They also owe me drivers without bugs.

I paid for products. Those products do not perform as they should in all applications.

I know that the usual cycle is 6 months between products. I just felt that I had been steered towards the 256GTX's and they were to be the shiznit for the next 6 months.

All you guys who have lots of negative stuff to say about my post, you can go take a long walk off of a short pier. I am entitled to my opinion and feelings just like you are. I did not direct a single derogatory comment at anyone here, but you fanboys gotta get your digs in. You can quote me and roflmao all you like, so what? Does it make you feel like a real man to lambast someone for they're feelings?

Perhaps I over reacted in my post, but my god, have you lot no understanding?

Some free advice: get over it and get a life (or some compassion).
