Hey and welcome to Nvnews!

First off, PCIe has much more bandwidth than AGP, but it still isn't useful with current video cards. Even a top end new video card can't take all the bandwidth of AGP8X. The reason for everyone moving over is the fact that eventually video cards will need this extra bandwidth and PCIe is a way of futureproofing. Nvidia has stopped making their high-end cards for AGP and one can only assume that ATi would follow. If you have a decent AGP system, there's no need to upgrade unless you want a 7 series Nvidia video card, but if you're buying an all new system, there's no reason to stick to AGP.

Hope that helps!

agp8x has 1gb/s bandwidth and pci-e has 2gb/s bandwidth and better latency.

i think the main three reasons are:

SLI capable cards
HyperMemory
And the ability for data to flow like this from the cpu bus and the gpu:

gpu >>>>> cpu
gpu <<<<< cpu

at the same time while agp has to do gpu to cpu then cpu to gpu.

Don't forget that PCIe allows for more power to the card.

to elaborate on what was already mentioned, the increased bandwidth is now in both directions.

with agp, the full bandwidth could only be utilized from the cpu to gpu, however the gpu to cpu did not have the full bandwidth. with PCIe, other things can be rendered by the gpu and sent back to the memory/cpu. also allows for other devices (such as a physics processor) to be added to the card and have full bandwidth back to the memory/cpu from the card. :D

Also PCI Express x16 slot are cheaper to produce than AGP slot. :)

Really? I didnt know that... Maybe we will see cheaper mobos down the line :)

From what I always knew. Ati and nvidia wanna introduce and slowly force people to start buying PCI-E mobos so when they do need the extra bandwidth that AGP can't provide, most people will be using PCI-E by then. And yeah... SLi!

eVGA now provides free nf4 SLI mobos for you whiners that want a 7 series card without a PCIe motherboard :D.

actually pci-e 16x is 4gb per second, not 2. Agp 8x is 2gb. So, double the speed from the card slot is a nice selling point here to relieve bottlenecks.

^ oops, that's right. what was i thinking. gaming mmorpg games without sleeping for days thanx to insomnia like those koreans will do that to you. :retard:

but bottlenecks? there's nothing out there that makes agp4x choke much less pci-e.

So that you can buy a new system. :( More profit for the makers.
