View Full Version : Running GL screen savers goes black?

Is anyone having problems with Really Slick XscreenSavers (http://rsxs.sourceforge.net/) going black after about ten minutes or so (not sure exactly how many minutes)? I checked the settings in Xscreensaver (e.g., change screen savers, black out, etc.), and things look fine. The regular default 2D screen savers like xmatrix doesn't do this. The black out does not mean monitor went to sleep (light was still green).

Does it sound like the latest NVIDIA driver issue? I compiled with the .src.rpm files. I am using Red Hat Linux v7.2 with compiled Kernel v2.4.20, Leadtek GeForce4 Ti4200 (128 MB of RAM), 512 MB of RAM, etc.

[ADDED another problem] Also, read below about using RivaTV (http://rivatv.sourceforge.net/) seems to corrupt my desktop (fruity colors, corruption, etc.). I didn't have this problem before 41.91 drivers.

Thank you in advance. :)

Send a report to linux-bugs@nvidia.com with details, and we'll look into it.

--andy Well, first of all. I want to be sure this is a bug and not a weird configuration. I want to see if anyone else is noticing this. Bascially, download the screen saver from the URL I provided above and run it for an hour.

--andy Andy, if you want to test it. This is what I did:

1. Compile Kernel 2.4.20 from kernel.org in Red Hat Linux v7.2 (I updated everything installed from up2date and Ximian's red-carpet).

2. Used NVIDIA drivers 41.91 src.rpm to compile. Everything was fine here. I removed the last version of driver set and install the new one.

3. I tested the X, RTCW, and Q3A mods. No problems. No slow downs or anything odd.

4. Downloaded and compiled Really Slick XScreenSavers (rsxs) from http://rsxs.sourceforge.net/. I installed them, and they worked but I had the symptoms I mentioned.

Also, it seems like rivatv (http://rivatv.sourceforge.net/) likes to corrupt my desktop with the 41.91 drivers. :(

I found out the video corruption with RivaTNT is a bug:

This is a bug (also noted in the bug tracker at sf) which is hard to fix.
Consider it as "normal". The "random static fruit color mess" is the
video picture inside the frame buffer (in UYVY color format) which
overlaps with existing X driver buffers.

Thanks for using RivaTV,
