View Full Version : ATi R520 family roadmap.
Anandtech (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2501)
It looks like no platinum edition this time.
R520 XT replaces the top model(platinum) coming early october and R520XL(replaces XT) coming early september.
Mainstream RV530 is coming late october.
* 600MHz Core Clock
* 1400MHz Memory Clock
* 256MB Maximum Memory Support
* 128-bit Memory
* 12 Pipelines
* 16x32-1.4 DDR3
thanks for the heads up dude.... wow if the rv530 has a 600+ clock, i guess the rumors of the r520 having 700+ are true ...but i guess we still dont know the pipe config yet...

if the rv530 has a 12 pipe, the R520 XT is probably going to have either 20 or 24 pipes.
Judging by R520XL's early september availability it seems that the rumored 25th of August launch is true.
I would imagine the R520Xt as a 24pipe card since their mainsteam card has 12.

Remember, ATI cards always had high clocks yet with the recent cards they haven't had the performance to back it.
Im looking foward to see what Nvidia will counter with if the high end cards top the GTX. Glad I went eVGA.
My guess is that nvidia can only counter it with an overclocked G70 version(500/1400) if they need to.For what we know R520 could be slower than 7800GTX

probably all depends on how fast the R520 is. If the R520 absolutly blows the GTX away, I imagine they will release an Ultra to make up the performance delta. If it is just slightly faster, I think they'll probably just wait and release the G80.
I'm more excited about the new midrange offerings.
Good knews that ATi is bridging its cards back to AGP too.
There will be more info coming soon from Anandtech and they also say R520 has a new memory controller.Remains to be seen if its more effective.

I don't even think that will cause them to release a new card. What's the point?

this situation reminds me of S3 cards. they have great features but they are 9 months behind the technology curve. ATI has some nice cards on its hands, but they arent sure when people will buy them, and you know nvidia is just kickin' back waiting to pounce

Crossfire
Yeah? Where is it?
Bah, when are midrange cards going to move past the 128bit memory bus. The R530 has so much potential with a massive fill-rate of 7200 mp/s. Sure the 1400mhz memory clock will provide a decent ammount of bandwidth, but the card will still choke with heavy AA and AF enabled.
I want the specs of the X800XL. :thumbdwn:
EDIT: lol X800XL. I meant the R520XL. :p
Yeah? Where is it?
They just delayed it until the R520 launch which they would have done in the first place.Launching crossfire with X850 would be stupid.

Yet, every example they've talked about for CrossFire has been with the X800XL and the X850XT. Seems stupid to talk about those products and then not even have it available for them.
And where are all the CF-enabled motherboards and the CF-ready cards? Again, X800XL and X850XT versions were talked about and yet, none have materialized.
Why Ati needs new mobos for Crossfire?
They really need two Pciex16? :confused:

I bet their top offerings won't hold a candle against nVidia's 7800GTX, but I do agree that their mid-range offering will be quite interesting.

IMO is was stupid all along for ATi to put money on making crossfire X850 cards with its next gen cards coming only a few months later.
I guess they wised up and desided to launch crossfire along with R520.
so have they moved to sm3.0 or what?
I have to say, like it or not, ATI is still gonna sell alot of these. Why? Because they're making an AGP version.

I agree it was stupid, but at the same time, it was more stupid for them NOT to do it. Since the r520 has been absent so long, I'd be willing to bet that a number of people who were looking to buy it defected to nVIDIA due to the 7800GTX kicking so much ass and two of them in SLi kicking even more ass.
Besides that, no one has tested CrossFire yet. No one knows how it performs or anything. The first gen is quite a gamble and again: I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people that were going to buy it with/for the X8x0 cards are going to wait now. Dropping ~$200 on a new mobo, and at least $500 (but I'd bet closer $650 of $700) per card for a brand new technology seems waaaay too dangerous. At least to me.

Nvidia already have sm3 AGP cards and thanks to the hsi bridge
they can make 7800 Agp when they want to :angel:

Check Anands Crossfire preview here (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2477).
Would it matter launching crossfire X850 when Nvidia had already launched 7800GTX?
Ati should want to launch crossfire with a card that can take the performance crown and X850 wasn't it.

But trying to convince people to buy a new motherboard and two $500+ cards for a brand-new technology that, from skimming the Anand article, is still quite buggy and missing features is going to be a lot harder than lowering the prices on the X850 and getting people to buy two of those.
'Sides, nVIDIA wasn't looking for the performance crown with the 6600GT's SLi-ability, the X850 CrossFire could easily compete with those cards and trounce them for a little bit more money than two 6600GTs.
