It will be on the market for about a month.

1st, no games are being programmed to take advantage of 512

2nd, 512 cards are no faster than 256k cards

3rd, the 7800 series is out so no one really cares.

Intresting idea, however for the price getting a 7800GT seems alot better deal.

Doom3, FEAR, Battlefield2, and EQ2 use over 256mb of texture memory.

512mb of memory would really help smooth out games like BF2 and FEAR, but at $400 its the same price as the 7800GT.

Yeah, somehow I think a company like eVGA did their homework as to whether or not the market would support this card. Call me crazy.

Besides the same arguments against more memory on video cards were thrown out there back in the Voodoo2 days. 3Dfx themselves said 8MB was more than enough yet they soon ate their words and released the 12MB version.

I still say 3Dfx is crazy. 12MB! No computer would ever need more than 16MB of system RAM!

Doom3 series ring a bell?
And why would that make us rush out and buy a 512mb card? Hmmm? Maybe mention F.E.A.R., a game that has pretty good potential.

The bar is always raised higher and higher. With F.E.A.R. set to arrive in October we're bound to see more games like it and even more demanding soon after.

Thats pretty cheap seeing that the 256meg is around 300 bucks, although its kind pointless since the 7800gt will smoke it and you can find it for less.

whats the point of this card? honestly, it offers no real world performance boost.

Yes, I'm aware of D3, but its old.

I agree that 512 cards will be used (and beyond), just not right now.

F.E.A.R. will be out soon. And more demanding (not less demanding) games will soon follow. One could make a decent argument that 256MB of memory is overkill for many games.

The point of this card is as subjective as the point of a 7800GTX, 6800 Ultra or even something like an ATI 9600 is. It depends on who you are and what you think is worth the money. eVGA has reason to believe that the market will bear this card. Time will tell if they're right or not.

The point I was trying to make, is whats the reasoning in making a 6800 with 512? The card is last generation, and the new games will play better on a 256k 7800GT or GTX anyway. Benchmarks with all 512k cards has proven there is no performance boost. 512k is still one or two generations away, and by then most games will require it for optimal performance.

More ram will never make your FPS improve, its about smoothing the experience, less hitching. BF2 and FEAR both use over 256mb of GDDRAM and would clearly benefit from this card. Granted, a 7800GTX will still play at a smoother overall experience, you just have to turn the texture resolutions down.

Turn texture resolutions down? I'm at the maxium settings, and its smooth as glass.

Turn texture resolutions down? I'm at the maxium settings, and its smooth as glass.Again, it's subjective. If it's smooth as glass for you then that's great...but it might not be perceived that way by someone else. I was getting at what Jakup elaborated on...more video memory would reduce hitching and main memory swapping in general.

Here's a scenario where this card would be a good fit...someone that is perfectly content to play at 1024x768 (so a 7800 GTX could arguably be overkill regarding FPS considering the price to performance ratio) but they experience hitching in some of their games that make use of crazy texture settings.

You have 2gbs of ram. You are substituting video ram with system ram... a slower alternative. Try 1gb of ram, its impossible to play. But with a 512mb card and 1gb of ram? Smooth as glass.

jaKUp lays the smackdown to the 512mb haters lol. :afro:
