Well, seeing as my Prescott died (oh well) I have ordered an ABIT 939 MoBo and will pick up a venice 3200+ at the end of next week :D
I hope its as good as I expect it to be.
is there anything an AMD noob needs to know before hitting the power button for the first time (ill be using a Zalman 7700alcu).?
thanks - and wish me luck next week.

The only thing you need to know is that you should've made the switch a LONG time ago. ;)
But seriously, the A64 line is amazing. My 3000+ OCs to 2.25 and is begging for more. It's a great chip. Enjoy yours. :)
And dont bother installing the AMD Cool n Quiet drivers unless you want the cpu to run much slower than it actually can. Also benchmarks like sandra give you Celeron level scores with CnQ turned on.

I'll be curious to see how your temps report. Mine are still messed up, even w/the latest BIOS 24.

^^ lower than a Prescott - lol
I take it the temp reporting on the ABIT AV8 is f**ked up then??
still i'll not be overclocking the AMD so temps are a non issue TBH for me, I think it was OC'ing that killed my Prescott.

Quick question - how well do the venice core's handle single-sided memory?? - the crucial memory advisor does state that all my RAM is compatable with the new MoBo.
I know the 2x512's will be fine but will the 2x256's also work OK??

I take it the temp reporting on the ABIT AV8 is f**ked up then??The odd thing is that it doesn't seem to affect everyone. But yeah, for some people it's totally screwed up. A lot of people claim that this latest BIOS release has fixed it for them, but for me (naturally) it's still toast. 51c idle in the BIOS.
Wellcome to the AMD side :) I still love my FX53 but I have been eyeing up a 4800+ beauty :D

Duel core is the future for sure.... :D
Future...possibly but a bitch to code for according to Gabe...but that's what he gets paid for....code :p
Different to code for, not a bitch. Alot of ppl do have headaches with multi-threaded stuff, but us console coders have been doing it a while. :)
K mate you are a coder so you would no more about it than me! :) Hang on....for a while? :D

Heh... duel core still has a way to go. Hell .. only a handfull of things even use 64bit single core technology to some of its use. Thats why im just sitting back and watching the dust clear for now. Hopefully by winter I will have a better idea of what I want and hopefully duel core prices will drop. Because I do think thats where things are going :)

THe single sided memroy should be no problem.

Good luck using 2 different kinds of memory... the only way I could use more than 2 sticks was if I had 2 more that were the same exact kind. Our boards are different, but I think its a limitation of the CPU or Chipset. 3 sticks didnt work for me, 2xCorsair value and 2x Corsair XMS didnt work, 2x Corsair value and 2xRosewill 256Mb didnt work... I had to buy another identical set of 2x512mb to get more than a gig.
Hopefully it works for you though.
for 939 to get dual channel ram must be installed in pairs.

AMD's seems to heat up faster, in my experience anyways, but should be no problemo with nice fans

Yeah but Ive only seen it work if all 4 sticks are identical, not just the pairs ;)
EDIT: Using an nForce 3 system I mean. I havent seen any VIA 939 systems myself.

good to see you left the dark side

I install the amd driver but leave CnQ disabled. I think it's good to have the most uptodate processor driver regardless.

OK - just ordered the 3500+ Rev "E"
was only £20 more than the 3200. Should arive on Tuesday next week, just after the bank holiday.
MoBo is here and installed already so I've only got to drop the chip in and away I go!!!
I'm using a friends P4 2.8 northwood with a 9800 Pro at the moment and I have to say - Its darn slow!!!!!!!! (roll on Tuesday!!!)
