Google Talk! (http://www.google.com/talk/)
Works through your GMail account. Fun little toy to try out on your lunch break.

It's also possible to get Google Talk running with your Trillian and GAIM clients.
Instructions are here. I have it running with the Jabber plugin on Trillian 3.1 Pro.

Don't need another messenger service, most of my friends have AIM/Xfire.

Man, I would use this in a heartbeat, but nearly all of my friends use AIM. If this was compatible with AIM, I would pay money to use it.

I've read that its very minimal, and that:
Google Talk is Spartan in the way that the Lacedemonians were Spartan: it seems ancient!
No group chat, no emoticons, confusing chat logs, no skins, and the list goes on and on. I'm not saying that all of these features are good per se, but if you like them, or at least want the choice to use them, you'd be better off downloading GAIM.

I have this hooked into my Trillian too
I think Google is a bit wrong on some points. Here they have a nice, fast, lightweight chat service. That is quick to download, easy to set up, and all that fun jazz
But they made a mistake
By limiting it to only people with g-mail accounts, they are screwing up. AIM became popular cause everyone could sign up, create an account, and start chatting right away. By having to use e-mail, and having to add people by e-mail, I can't see this ever taking off

OMG I DID NOT REALIZE THIS EXISTED. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I like it so far.
A nice change of pace from msn. A good chunk of people I know have already switched to this.

Jeez, Google talk is all over the news here about how you can "Talk" over the interent using a microphone. Thus saving hundreds on phone calls. I was under the impression that this has been possible for quite some time now with other chat programs...
The media here never ceases to amaze me. If it were a free VoIP service then they would have something to report.

It's more a voip tool than an Instant Messanger although I'm sure that element will be more fully developed over time as well. One thing compared to skype, at least for me, It is way, way clearer and more distortion free. When talking to the other person it sounds like your actually talking to him/her not some cheap immitation.
