View Full Version : Free firewall?

Can anybody recommend a free firewall program that will run on an older system? I just installed more memory on a clients machine, because they complained it was running to slow (this machine is a Pentium II with 256megs of RAM) and noticed they have a ton of programs running on startup. One of them that I want to get rid of is their McAfee firewall and replace it with a simple free one that won't take up much resources. They're running Windows 2000 but I'm not sure what service packs, if any, are installed. Also, whats the command for the System Configuration on 2000? I tried msconfig.exe but I guess 2000 is something different...
Thanks for any help!

just use Windows Firewall on SP2. It does a more than good enough job.
If WindowsXP won't run on your PII, then just use ZoneAlarm. It's free.
ZoneAlarm is a good recommendation but it has become somewhat bloated.
I always liked Tiny Firewall: http://www.webmasterfree.com/tpfw.html

I would also recommend running Steve Gibson's LeakTest (http://www.grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm)

The XP version will run on Win2k (msconfig, that is). I believe you can just copy it (no install or whatever). Here's a link where you can download it:

I like ZoneAlarm but if their system is older / slow, it might be better to use a less bloated firewall.
I use Kerio v2.something. If you need more than WinXP firewall, and don't like ZoneAlarm, this is the go.
