I currently run a 6600 gt in my micro case and it been able to run BF2 at full settings, and doom 3 at almost full settings, what im wondering is what games do you 7800 owners play that need that much power, seems like a waste. Wouldent it be better to wait and buy one of those cards when there around $150, and when power like that is actually needed for games?

Definetely not a waste. Tried FEAR with AA/AF and Softshadows? How about Battlefield2 with all options maxed? Those games can even bring my SLI system to its knees occasionally.

What resolutions are you running BF2 and Doom 3 at though? AA/AF enabled?

Do you play any games with HDR enabled?

Whether it's a waste of money or not is purely subjective. Many folks would say that your setup is a waste of money...it's all just personal opinion.

The 7800 series really excels with higher resolutions AND with AA/AF settings of at least 4xAA/8xAF in any game. Also for people with displays supporting higher than 1600x1200 resolutions the 7800 cards scale right up to that and more.

I run BF2 at max res that looks good 1600x1200(i think not at home right now) all settings on max, what is that HDR thing?

And i wasnt dissing you guys by waste of money i meant for the games that are out today, no games i can find seem to need all that power

1600x1200 with all options maxed??! Run FRAPS to see how many FPS you are averaging.

Also, when you crank up the AA/AF... thats when performance really starts to dip :)

The 7800 is for gamers that want to game at the highest possible resolutions with all settings maxed. One is enough to do this today with almost any game and running two in SLI is just fps heaven with some future proofing thrown in the mix;)

really guys i have BF2 setting on full and then idk what my FPS rate is but i can freak out on the mouse and its still super fast to refresh, theres no jerking, its as smooth as unreall 2004 with the 4x AA and all that on and shadows maxed everything on high

one more think if my 6600 gt runs so well, just under whats needed for super fast doom, why would you need more than a 6800?

Sorry but I don't believe that you are runnign BF2 at 1600x1200 with max settings on a 6600GT, My old 6800GT couldn't keep a smooth FPS at 1280x1024 with most of the settings max (no AA or AF)...

I run it at 85hz idk what refresh rate you have maybe thats why it was slow?

I do have my card overclocked to 1.2ghz mem and 576
I used ntune
running temp at load is 70*C

my ram is dual channel and reads around 5000mb/s

refresh rate only determines the frame rate if you have vsync on and even then it just limits your frame rate from exceeding the refresh rate.

Sorry but unless you post a screenshot and benchmark your full of it...

My RAM is DC reading at almost 6K, Card was at 65C load majority of the time... A 6600GT is NEVER faster then a 6800GT @ Ultra+ speeds.

You could just run FRAPS and send a screenshot with the FPS counter on...or post the FRAPS log file results. It just doesn't sound like you have everything as maxed out as you think. I didn't think you were "dissing" anybody here...just pointing out that the age-old debate about what is a waste of money or not is so subjective that it's hardly worth even brining up. :)

I agree. I had a dual 6800GT SLI rig and at 1600x1200 with all settings maxed I still got dips around 30fps when a full arty strike hits or something similar.

It is a seperate program. BF2doesn't have it's own internal benchmarking system so you must use thrid party utility. Either way it is still a tough game to bench becuase you could have varying intensity on the screen.

Maybe you just have a high tolerance for low frame rates compared to everyone else.

Either that or you are laggin to hell and getting your ass whooped on.

Whats your BF2 nick?

BTW anyone else think that the TSAA is a little slow when AA is at 4x on the 7800?

I felt a signficant slowdown last night when I was staring through a fence at close range.

Judging by your lack of knowledge in the field, i'd guess your not an enthusiast and you just wouldent/don't appreciate what a 7800 can do. When you hit enthusiast level parts in anything, be it, wine, flashlights, headphones, speakers, or computer hardware, you need a higher level of knowledge to respect the higher end gear.

and hardrives have absolutely nothing to do with framerates btw.

Mike
