View Full Version : Stupid question? I have 6800GT's in SLI, should I upgrade?

With the 7800GT's out now, would it make ANY sense at all to upgrade 2x6800gt's in SLI to a single 7800GTX or dual 7800GT's???

Every review I can find is kind of hard to understand, in some cases it appears a set of 7800GT's in SLI is not much faster at all then a set of 6800GT's, and other reviews make it seems they would be MUCH faster.

I'm interested in being able to play F.E.A.R. when it comes out and want it to be nice and smooth.

With the 6800gt's I've hit as high as 10,XXX in 3d mark 2005, so am I stupid to even think of such a thing?

EDIT - I'm going to be adding a new AMD X2 4400+ to my system soon, if that makes any difference.

Not really worth it. It is alot faster in shader intensive games however...

Yeah, I guess thats my main question then, I've played the FEAR demo a few times at max settings (well, at 1024x768 because of my Dell 2005, but everything at max) and with that it runs pretty well, every now and then it gets a choppy, but I imagine thats due to the fact that it's a demo release and from what I've heard, not very well tuned.

But thats my current benchmark is to run that game well.

EDIT - Oh yeah, supposedly the retail FEAR game will take advantage of multi threaded CPU's, and with my X2 hopefully overclocked to 2.6ghz or so I imagine that should boost it. Maybe I should forget about the whole idea until FEAR actually comes out. LOL.

A multi-cpu aware game is out that soon? I thought it would be at least 2006 before sucha thing happened? Where did you hear this?

Hmm... I had read this on the FEAR forums, but now in looking for it I cant find any reference to it.

Perhaps I was dreaming?

Anyhow, as I cant find anything I'll have to take back my claim of the rumor, seems there is no mention and thus, probably wont support it. :(

6800GT SLI -> 7800GTX = not worth it
6800GT SLI -> 7800GT SLI = not worth it IMO
6800GT SLI -> 7800GTX SLI = worth it :thumbsup:

LOL... more like:

6800GT SLI -> 7800GTX = I could do it easy.

6800GT SLI -> 7800GT SLI = Wallets getting awful thin.

6800GT SLI -> 7800GTX SLI = Credit Card melts.

:D

I think you are probably better off upgrading your CPU first, which you seem to be doing anyway. If you can sell both of your 6800GTs so that you only come out of pocket a little for the GTX, I would do it and add a second later on down the road.

That didn't take long. Yeah, I'm eyeballing a 7800GT as well.

i know it, i remember asking you about my 6600gt's a few weeks ago, bu i have seen the 7800gt beating up on games lately.. and its a good price..

i am weak against it powers, resistance was futile... i hate that i havent kept my sli very long, but i'll survive..:)

Just add another card down the road...

The GT is at such a good bang for the buck price point, it is hard to resist.

I too have almost similar problem.......running one 6800GT....thinking of :
1. keeping what i have...(games are choppy)
2. another 6800GT and SLI
3. 7800GT...not GTX.
4. Wait and see what Crossfire does.
Am new here, and would love input, so confused about this SLI
