You should probably clarify what chip its for (looks like Realtek ALC650)... AC97 is an audio standard, not a piece of hardware.

Realtek's drivers support (AFAIK) any of its chipsets, except the non-digital ones (like those on Intel 9xx boards). The 650, 655 and 850 at the very least should all be supported.

Yeah, I think they are compatible like that, but theres a LOT of different AC97 chips... dont want to install this on a 8 year old board ;)

Who knows, but like a graphics drivers it's to either enhance or fix something, just because it isn't a graphics driver doesn't mean it may not be necessary.
Besides they update there drivers less than ATI does.
